If you can't slow down enough to completely avoid hitting the deer, then don't brake hard because your front end will tip down, thus allowing the deer to slide up the hood and crash through your windshield. I would rather not worry about the outcome for the deer (and hope to get a good meal out of the deal) and just hit the deer with the front of the vehicle which is better at handling collisions.
