A-freaking-men. Child support is set using a guideline and then a fairly simple equation. There is a worksheet that states the guideline based on the income brought into the household when both parent are together. For example, if I make 60K a year and baby daddy makes 40K, the total income is 100K a year so you use the guidelines to look up what the support for a child is per month in a household that makes 100K a year. We'll say it's $1000. Child support is then set for each parent based on the percent of income each parent brought into the household. Using my numbers from above, I would be responsible for 60% of that $1000 and daddy for 40%; ie. me $600 and him $400. Since the child lives with me of course I don't have to pay myself support.
MD has one of the fairest systems I've ever seen and what proves it is, given the above numbers if custody of the child shifted and the daddy had custody the numbers would remain the same. I'd be paying him $600 a month.
Of course all of the above numbers were just a crude example but you get the point.
