There is no real reason to believe that father was selfish about anything.
It is just making assumption without any evidence or facts.
I believe we must always assume the parents are innocent.
But for the sinful boy I would point out the command to honor thy
parent(s).
It is a sign that the custodial failed to teach the boy right from wrong.
