They're obviously not the same thing, but from what you say, it sounds like he's not comfortable discussing marriage at this point.
Maybe he's afraid that if he tells her he doesn't want to get married any time soon, she'll bail. Either way, no good can come from her forcing him to talk about something he doesn't want to talk about.
