You are right Steny isnt going anywhere. In 1966, he received his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. That same year, at the age of 27, he won a seat in the Maryland Senate, after campaigning on a fair housing platform.
On the Appropriations Committee, Congressman Hoyer secured funding for numerous important projects in the Fifth District and throughout the State of Maryland. He also has worked to ensure that the military bases in the Fifth District not only survived base closings but grew and thrived.
Congressman Hoyer is widely recognized as a national leader on issues affecting Federal employees and retirees. In addition to guiding FEPCA to passage, he fights year in and year out for fair pay and benefits for Federal employees, many of whom live in his fifth district.
Now mostly this is called pork ,and Steny delivers that pork, certainly it helps the fifth district, but it also keep him in office. By working for us he is working for himself. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
As Majority leader he is in a powerful position, more powerful than any other former Congressman from Maryland. He also has a war chst of several millions.
Steny is a career politician who knows how to use pork to his advantage, has innumerable contacts with other politicians and plenty of money to spend on re-election. He is also a flaming liberal, pro-death baby killer ,who will vote party every time. I believe his pro-death stance is more going along with what liberals in Maryland want him to do than his own personal choice. Part of playing the political game. I do hold that against him. He is part of the machine that runs Marylands politics, but that wont get him out of office in Maryland, home to thousands of flaming liberals and party hacks..
He certainly isnt worried about a candidate like JPC who is unknown to anyone outside this forum and the butt of so many jokes here.
