Good help is hard to find in a grocery store these days. |
Your right - most of the "old part timers" stay there for the benefits. Now it is a revolving door of people who do not care.
There is something to be said working in a non-union Grocery Store. I am not bashing Unions - they do serve their purpose in the right industry and at the right time...
I was offered the management program with Safeway and turned it down... even then my benefits were "decent". I was
almost $15/hour part-time and double time was Sunday - this was mid/late 80's... I worked 3 weeks of 40 hours and my 4th week was 39 1/2 - if you worked 4 weeks of 40 they HAD to make you full-time.
Local 400 (Union) has really laid down over the years and I am surprised they still "negotiate" these crappy contracts... the company, as well as the union and the employee's they represent, cannot afford to strike. I remember going to the Cap Center at the "11th hour" and voting in the contract in the late 80's... it was a joke because it did not effect me, just new hires! Man, they got the shaft and it only gets worse...
Gee, wonder why the grocery prices are so damn high!
