First look at your 'reserve' term.
Most contract are 4/4. 4 years active duty, 4 year Inactive Ready Reserve(IRR) In the IRR you don't actually DO anything, your name is just maintained on a possible re-call list.
Now they do have some 2/4/2 Contracts where when you join the active component for 2 years, at the end of your active stint you go directly to an Active Reserve unit. (One weekend a month 2 weeks a year etc etc) of course these days, you may not see a difference between Active Duty and Active Reserve Duty... THEN you go on the IRR for the remaining 2 years.
The Army has most of the 2 year contracts, and I think the Navy has limited open contract 2 year.. BUT as soon as you strike out for an A school they add an additional 2 - 4 years to your contract.
Basically what I read above is about 10% of first time enlistees would qualify for Ed Benefits, and the chances are better than 50/50 that those other 90% are going to be in a combat zone, but if you are sitting on your ass at home on welfare suffering from some bull#### malady, you get your eduction 100% paid for.
Personally I think our soldiers, sailors and others deserve it, and have earned it.
