That's exactly it.

MSNBC had it's share of problems the first ten years. But, they were by far the best network to watch. CNN and FOX just made me while MSNBC delivered BREAKING NEWS and did so constantly.

Their best reporting came during the 2002 outbreak of violence in Israel. The Passover Massacre and the invasion of the West Bank. They had 3-4 reports on scene in the middle east covering the drama first hand. They had live video of every waking moment, every shooting and all. Their music, their coverage put viewers on the edge of their seats and MSNBC had it all live.

I know we'll probably never see that kind of reporting from an American news outlet again. Instead, they send a big-headed "newsman" to the scene for him/her to tell you what he/she experienced on the scene and how he/she is the newscast.

It's been a long time since I've seen ANY newschannel even come close to the quality of MSNBC from back in the day. Part of that, though, was that MSNBC didn't care about their ratings. They were the alternative for news while FOX was obsessed with shouting talking-heads and entertainment and CNN was beginning to obsses over Anderson Cooper. They didn't think twice about interrupting their primetime programming for a breaking event.

Look at when MSNBC recorded it's highest numbers. 9-11 and Hurricane Katrina. Why? These were earth-shattering breaking news events, at least here in the homeland. People wanted information.

I still maintain that if Hurricane Katrina were to hit tomorrow, MSNBC/CNN/FOX would all move it to the back burner for some celebirty tyraid or some meaningless Election 2008 speech by some person trying to sell his new book to the press.

Hell, look at their awesome job of covering the earthquake this morning.
