The objections that I've heard to these laws (which seem pretty common sense to me), is that it makes it too hard to vote. Bru posted about a group of nuns who couldn't vote

in Indiana's primary, even given the long lead time and high news coverage that they'd need ID. Then, they declined the ten day extension because a week and a half was not enough time to run down to their version of the MVA and get a state ID. Georgia actually GIVES AWAY for free ID's to people who can show they can't afford one (for this type of law), but it was still challenged as being too cumbersome to get.
It really boils down to Democrats wanting people to vote who should not be able to (illegal aliens, dead people, etc), and Republicans wanting a fair fight.
