By the time enough of either could be built and producing anything that hit our tanks, future technologies would have eliminated the need for the "extra" production.

I say leave it up to the states. If they want to invest in dying technology...let 'em.

Funny thing. Environmentalists are fighting for the environment, and oil companies are fighting for record profits.

Huh.

Who do you trust?
As has been pointed out again and again... the "it'll take years to see any benefit..." argument is worthless. Had we begun drilling in ANWR years ago, all those "... years to see any benefit..." would have already passed and we would already be enjoying the benefits. Yes, it will take five or more years to see any benefit, but if we don't get started then we'll never see a benefit.

As to alternative fuels, we've been told an effective alternative is right around the corner for the past 30+ years! We put moratoriums on new drilling back in the 1980s because by now we were all supposed to have access to low-cost fuel cell cars and gasoline would be relegated to the history books. Well, the restrictions on the oil exploration sure worked like a champ, but it looks like the green crowd was a bit overly optimistic about how soon those greenmobiles would be ready. Being duped once, should we really keep flogging ourselves with high gas prices for another five to ten years as we await that fabled greenmobile to finally arrive? I don't think I'm wanting to get suckered again. Low cost gas is a great thing, but even low cost gas isn't as cheap as distilled water that fuel cells will use, so once the fuel cells are available (if they ever are) they will replace gasoline engines just fine.

What's funny is the Greeners are fighting for the environment and in doing so are creating circumstances where the oil companies are making more profit than ever before. Even better, all the spending on alternative energy development that the Greeners are calling for is going right into the pockets of the oil and energy companies... and they wonder why R&D is going so slowly.
