Exactly. All "it'll take years" tells me is that it SHOULD have been done ten years ago - you know, when we were talking about it. I went to high school in the 70's with a guy who drove around in his father's electric car prototype. Yup, 30 years gone by - when will we see it? Alternative fuel and energy will be a small comfort to people who need it today. It's like telling someone who's starving that they should have grown a garden.
And so far, alternatives like hybrids STILL need gas - and the savings are not earth-shaking. Offering coupons or vouchers sounds like an idea which will produce results right away - but who buys a new car anytime they feel like it? I'm just paying off my last one - it will cost MORE for me to get a new one even with some coupon program.
And thus far, no alternative fuel program I know of addresses the many other transportation problems we face in the short term. We're not going to be hauling freight and running heavy duty equipment on bio-diesel or flying planes on batteries.
I just don't see the reasoning behind opposing drilling.
