From looking at the specs for your camera, It doesn't have an external flash option. You just have the built in flash.
There is an option to set the function at scene. I am getting a tripod - probably one at Radio Shack in Dunkirk for about $30.

Best I can say is to read your manual thoroughly, and stop at a book store and look for a How to use a Digital Camera book. I am not saying this to be a smart ass, these type books are just so much better than your manual.
It will teach you how a camera works and how to use it.
Biggest problem people have is, they keep the camera in Auto mode and never understand what the camera is doing or how it works.
I am pretty sure the book store in Wildewood has a few books like I mentioned.
