That was really arrogant of the singer. I would never imagine showing up to a concert and singing something I wasn't hired to sing. I don't think it was political, though. "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" is commonly used alongside the national anthem in some county ceremonies I've been to. To replace the anthem all together without clearing the agenda first, that's just bad tact as a performer, not as an activist of some kind.
