I thought the same thing when I looked at the map. Growing up within walking distance of the water, I can tell you where we spent most of our time as kids. That and exploring the woods. We would be gone most of the day. Luckily, the beaches near us had lifeguards and of course, we weren't allowed to swim without an adult if we were too young.
As for the predators, they've been around forever. We just didn't hear about them every single day back then, like we do now.
