OUR generation, we gathered around the TV after dinner and watched the local, then the network news. We didn't have Discover, or Dirty Jobs.
Hell, when I was 8, we had ONE channel, and watched whatever they decided to show us. 8 year old white boy watched SOOOOOOOUUUL Train at least once a week, it was on right after American Bandstand.
