That's the way I read it.
Analyzing his connections to Wright, Ayers, et al, and his explicit actions seems to be much more valuable than something he was only remotely connected to. This is telling us he was influenced by Liberal, potentially anti-American ideologies as a child. Well, no ####, look who he is today.
