I think it is fine that you find the worst in everything and are not optimistic, in the slightest. George Will, decidedly a conservative, one who would never vote for a John McCain, has said, numerous times, that one of the delights of being a conservative is expecting the worst from people, thus normally being right, so you get to be happy about being right, and then, when you're wrong, and they do good, you get to be happy about that as well.

You'll note on the chart that only 40% of us describe ourselves as conservative. That's not a majority. It is up to conservatives to express ourselves and our philosophies on good governance, and back it up, to the rest of the folks to get enough people on board to win elections. When people like W come along, and make absolute fools of us for supporting him, making a fool of 40% of the nation, and then media driven candidates, like McCain, come along to make arguments they aren't even vaguely familiar at let alone practiced at making, the 40% are stuck watching what the rest of the people think and do when the deception, the comes home to roost.

You can caterwaul all you like. The fact is, the people in the middle had NO reason to vote for McCain or any Republicans; the gulf between what he/they wanted to pretend to be vs. his record was not bridgeable with even the slightest bit of common sense.

We, the right, have failed by accepting the leadership of people who do NOT agree with us on the majority of issues. Especially the big ones. That does not make us a liberal nation; it makes us dummies.

So, again, did the GOP fail for not following the likes of W and McCain enough to the left or too much?

The answer is obvious to moderates. They'd rather give the new guy a chance than listen to more fairly tales from the right. We lost our cred. Simple as that.
