Talking New SOMD Button for Google ToolBar

If you have the latest Google Toolbar installed in your browser, you can install our new Toolbar button by clicking on the following link:

Google Toolbar - Error Adding Custom Button

If you need the Free Google Toolbar, just go to:

Google Toolbar

WHAT DOES IT DO?

Two things as demonstrated in the attached screen capture:

1) When you enter a query in the Google Toolbar Query box and press the SOMD button, you will search our master search engine at Southern Maryland Search

2) Clicking on the little down-arrow next to the button will display the latest threads from the Forums (Updates every 2 minutes).

UPDATE: As of 14-Nov-2008, I noticed that Google Toolbar for FireFox now supports custom buttons. I am running Firefox 3.0.4 at the moment. Not sure how far back they started supporting the functionality.

HOW TO UPDATE YOUR BUTTON:

Here's what you have to do if you already have the button installed in your Google Toolbar and would like to update to the latest version:

1) Click on the link to install the toolbar:

New SOMD Button for Google ToolBar

2) You should get a small pop-up window. Click on the REPLACE button.

3) All finished!

The HARDER WAY TO DO THE SAME THING:

1) Click on the Settings button in the Google Toolbar. A menu will drop down...select Options...

2) The Toolbar Options window will open. Click on the Buttons Tab.

3) Under Custom Buttons, select search.somd.com and click the Edit button on the right.

4) The Edit Google Toolbar Custom Button window will popup. Click on the link that says: Update button to latest version from somd.com.

5) Click Replace in the next pop-up window. Now OK or Accept you way out of all the windows. You should be good to go now.

Custom Buttons Not Available for Your Browser
Would I have to give up Mozilla and install Firefox?

Apparently, only the current Google Toolbar for MSIE supports custom buttons. The Firefox version update has not been released. Mozilla is the OnE browser I do not use and I do not know if the Toolbar is even available.

The new Google toolbar has a spellchecker, too. Not that I'm trying to say anything *cough* Larry *cough*...

And FYI, in the forum threads feature of the Google toolbar, if you hover over the thread title it gives you part of the first post just like in the thread listings on here.

Is that an alterable feature? Fifteen minutes without updating can seem like a reeeeeeeaaaaalllllllllyyy long time.

Talking Refresh is Now 5 Minutes

OK, I changed the refresh time to 5 minutes.

If you already installed the button, just delete it and then reinstall.

TO DELETE:

On the Google Toolbar, go all the way to the right and click on the Settings button, then select Options...

A Toolbar options Window opens. Click on the Buttons Tab.

Hilight the search.somd.com entry under custom buttons and press the Remove button on the right.

Now just click on the link to reinstall:
