Isn't the speed limit in Wildewood 35? And if he was going 30+ mph, then you obviously saw him before you entered the crosswalk, and instead of waiting for him to pass, you jumped into the crosswalk because you knew that once you were in it, you have the right of way? Does this sound about right?

"Almost killed" means lying in a hospital bed with tubes sticking out of you. No blood was drawn. You had a "near miss". Very different.

I think perhaps 30mph is an exaggeration. Most folks cant accurately judge speed even in a vehicle, let alone from outside. And no, you do not have to come to a stop at a crosswalk. You must yield right of way to someone IN the crosswalk, but if they are not in the crosswalk as you approach, you do not have to stop and wait to see if they will.
Now, me, I know pedestrians leaving stores are like freaking rabbits, seem to pick a direction and speed at random, defying any attempt to predict WTH they are going next, so I treat them accordingly, giving them wide berth and lots of clearance, but some folks dont.

There are some crosswalks that require a stop but there are signs that tell the drivers to stop. One that comes to mind is the one on Rt5 at St. Mary's College. If there are students waiting to cross, drivers have to stop.

In an ideal world, people stop and yield to those on the crosswalk. In this place I like to call reality, that doesn't always happen. Whether someone isn't paying attention, doesn't notice you, or doesn't know the law, they might drive through the cross walk.
Until you see people slow down then you DONT cross, whether you have the right of way or not. It's just as much YOUR fault if you were almost killed. Don't cross in front of traffic. Like desertrat said, look both ways before you cross the street :yay:
It's just like with two cars...do you look both ways or do you ignore traffic, even if you have the right of way? Great way to get into an accident. Even still, that's safer than being hit as a pedestrian. So if you are careful when driving then you'd think being careful when you have far less protection. Guess not. It seems like Social Darwinism may have failed yesterday, but just you wait.
And yes, the person driving the car was an even bigger ####### for not stopping.

I don't slap Mr. T in the face anymore than I than I trust my life to the decisions of those driving vehicles 20 times my body weight.
Maybe I have the right of way on foot by law, but those with much larger mass have the right of way by physics.

I cross the road from my parking spot to my job every day in a crosswalk. The majority of the cars do not stop even though it is a MD law. I have watched more than one person get a ticket for not stopping. I have watched the first car in line stop, only to have the second car pass them on the right. Like the other posters said, look both ways, alot of drivers on the roads have no clue about a crosswalk.

Guess you read about as well as 75% of the others who drive through Wildewood. NO WHERE IN WILDEWOOD IS THE SPEED LIMIT 35! The max on the parkway is 30 and every neighborhood street is 25. Now, let's see if you can tell us what a red, multi-side sign with red writing on it means!

It's been a long time since I've been in Wildewood, and I don't remember what the speed limit is. I was asking, smart ass.

I don't fear for my life when I go walking because I know how to approach a crosswalk; and that would be defensively.
It's not clear if you were already fully in the crosswalk or if you entered the crosswalk at the same time the vehicle arrived at the crosswalk.
Take a look at the attached- if you don't want to read the whole thing just do a search for 'crosswalk'. The laws are pretty clear who's responsible for what.
I do tend to agree with you that many drivers do not obey the crosswalk laws; just like they don't obey the speed limit, stopping at stop signs or stop lights for that matter.
It's you vs. them & you might as well be defensive about it, because being offensive on the highways gets people killed everyday.

or the people that will walk down the middle of the road in some wildewood neighborhoods when there IS a sidewalk. visited a friend yesterday in dahlia park. Perfectly good, completely empty sidewalk right next to the street but a family of genuises with a stroller decided to take a walk down the middle of the street instead.

I'm not sure if people are aware that passing someone like that is illegal unless there is a designated passing lane on the shoulder. Willows has a couple of them, but not at the park...but you'll still see people pass on the shoulder over there as well.

i remember back when we use to be taught to look for cars before we stepped out into a parking lot or onto a road instead of just assuming that all cars will stop for us. you don't know how many times i have been driving through parking lots and people will just walk right out, without looking or even trying to look, and then walk their slow a$$ across the parking lot. half the time i wish i could just run their dumb a$$es over.

is the solution to the Wildewood traffic. This came to directly from the Dept of Land Use and Growth Management or LUGM.
"The PUD zoning gives the County and developer specific rights and responsibilities, which allow us to work with them to address these issues. The developer is beginning to design a connection to Lawrence Hayden Road, that will be constructed through Primrose Park as their next component of their development. This will help reduce the traffic increase on Wildewood Parkway. We are also continuing to explore additional connections (one from Primrose Park and Dahlia Park thru the future technology park expansion to Airport Road, another longer term project is the construction of Lawrence Hayden Road extended to MD Route 4 at Indian Bridge Road, for which we have recently begun a mapping project). These connections will also serve to reduce the increase in Wildewood Pkwy traffic."
There were other issues discussed but I cannot for the life of me, understand how putting through roads in to other roads is going to reduce traffic. Once the general public learns of the shortcuts through Wildewood, it will only get worse. Am I missing something here? I wonder how many of our Wildewood neighbors in Primrose Park and Dahlia Park know about these propsed roads. YeeHaw!

somdforever, read close, these thing wont "reduce traffic", they will "reduce the increase in traffic".
Point being that it will just keep the amount of traffic from growing as much as it would without the changes. The following numbers are made up to illustrate.Say right now the parkway carries 3,000 cars a day. Projections, with the new housing coming online in Wildewood, calls for there to be 5,000 cars a day in the next five years. Since the parkway carries %99 of all traffic into and out of the area, all 5,000 cars use it.
Now, you add two more entrances, letting 1700 of those cars use the new entrances, then the traffic on the parkway doesnt grow to 5,000, it only grows to 3300. Since most of those new cars wont use the parkway. In reality, some of the new folks will ise the parkway, but some of the current residents will switch off the parkway onto the new routes.
but looking at them, I dont know how well thats going to work Cant say how many folks who live in Wildewood also work at the airport or the tech park up there, and those seem to be the only folks who would use those.

One of the points I was trying to make is that Wildewood Parkway is currently used as a short-cut to the Wildewood shopping center, Wildewood Technology Park, SMHEC (Airport Drive). By adding the roads as described, do you not think those people coming north on St. Andrews will not take the "new" entrance to get to the shopping center, tech park, or Airport Drive instead of coming all the way to the current Rte. 4/Wildewood Parkway entrance? Of course they will; and that traffic will flow from the end of the parkway to Smoke Hill or Wildewood Blvd. If Lawrence Hayden is pushed through, those businesses on Airport View Drive (and their customers) can then use the parkway as a short cut to St. Andrews Church Road.
Although all this is still in the planning stages (and we all know how long that can take in St. Mary's), there are no plans being made to help control the traffic. Building more ingress/egress points is not the answer. Just look at Rte. 235!
