Garden Lizard?

I'm used to only seeing skinks with blue tails or the orange headed skink type lizards around here... anyone know what kind this is??

Funny you should mention that. My co-worker said he thinks there really is global warming going on cause he saw the same thing for the first time this year, like they are moving up from the south.

We found a very strange lizard at my parents house last week. It had a lot of yellow on it and it was about 6 inches long. It was in the kitchen. When hubby caught it to throw it outside it was trying to bite his fingers. He set it out in the wood pile. We've seen it (or it's relatives) around a few times this month. Along with a lot of the normal blue tale skinks.

My son who lives in Mechcanicsville has what appears to be a family of them that stay under his shed, there is at least 3 of them, they come out and just sit on a tree stump or a rock and seem to just soak up the sun. They come back every year from wherever they hibernate too.

Or it could be a western fence lizard. I brought a bunch out with me when I moved here. It was getting crowded back there.

I 've seen those all my life growing up here in southern MD and around my family cabin in WV. As a kid, my father told me to leave the brown ones alone and kill the blue tail lizards. He said it's like crows that makes the blue jays disappeared. The more you kill the blue tail lizards, the population of brown lizard will bounce back. Just like Rockfish and the Blues. Right now without enough coffee, I forgot why the blue tail lizards are bad and the brown ones are better or more native to this area(?).

Im not a very big fan of the blue tail lizards, seem to have alot around the outside of the house, and on a few occasions they have gotten inside the house somehow.
I put out some of those sticky traps earlier this spring and got 3 of them in about 4 days, havent seen anymore so far this year.

I like the blue tailed one's better. They are skinks and their tails fall off. They are pretty. :smile:

My dog likes to hunt them. Every time she exits the house she insist on checking her favorite lizard spots hoping to catch one.

Lots of lizards have that capability. I found that out when I was about 6. Freaked me right out because the tail keeps wiggling. Also if they don't break off completely you get one with two tails. I had a couple as pets.
