Martial Arts

Does anybody think that training in the martial arts can improve health (both mental and physical) and fitness? Do you think adults and children with improved health and fitness will be better able to build a better community?  If we have better health and fitness, we have a better perception and outlook on ourselves and life in general.   Or............do you think that the martial arts is mainly about hurting people (even if it is the "good" guy defeating the "bad" guy) as the movies portray on a regular basis?

gmiller2,

Q1) Any exercise program or physical training should improve one’s health and fitness.   Q2) Are you implying that those who participate in martial arts training are better able to enhance their community, if that is your contention I disagree.  Q3)  No, I don’t think that martial arts is “mainly about hurting people”.  Though many of the techniques taught can cause injury when used against someone.

Mr. King - Your points are well taken.  Q1 - Key word is "should".  Q2 - I wasn't trying to imply anything.  It was just an open question.

Thanks for your input!

Speaking solely from my point of view as a brand new student:

Karate class has improved my physical well being (I no longer fall down quite as much)

Karate class has improved my mental well being (I no longer cry throughout the entire class)

Can they build a better community - of course, but every human is capable of that. It is whether or not they choose to. There are many civic, spiritual and community based organizations out there attempting to do just that. Not everybody who helps out is a practicer of any form of martial arts.

Karate class is still kind of scary to me as somebody who advocates peace. However, if I can prevent harm from someone who is intent upon causing it, then I am not advocating violence.

BTW, can you please get rid of the "&nbsp" in your posts. It's quite annoying.

There's a difference between teaching HOW to cause injury or pain and teaching someone TO cause injury and pain. As for aggression, some of the best guys I've met and seen, were some of the nicest, most tranquil people.

I took three different styles over 7 years, helped me in many ways, physically and mentally. It did not teach me to hurt people, only to be able to defend myself if needed, to never pick a fight, only defend myself or others if needed.

My brother was mastered in the art of kung fu. I learned quite a few moves from him and incorporated the warm ups and full body stretches into a near daily routine. Those stretches were unbelievable. I was so flexible at one point that I could stand straight with my back flat against the wall and you could take my leg and lift it straight up over my head and touch my toes to the wall.
