He is 5 i would think he understands.
His aunt lives in germany, She promised him she would stay the night with him.

dude, this is a good opportunity to introduce him to the world of geography. buy him a globe. show him where Germany is and where he lives, get a toy airplane and have the talk with him that way. i used that method to explain to my daughter why her daddy (who lives in Japan) can't be here every weekend.
