SMECO Restoration Efforts Continue

For power outages, Hurricane Isabel was the most devastating storm in SMECO’s 66-year history. More than half of our 130,000 customers lost electricity due to Isabel’s damaging winds. At the peak of the storm at 2 a.m. on Sept. 19, almost 73,700 Co-op customers were without power. This was more than double the figure for the February 1994 ice storm, when 35,000 customers lost electricity.

Utility workers from Indiana, Kentucky, Georgia, South Carolina, and Delaware have joined SMECO crews representing a total of approximately 400 utility workers in the field, supported by almost 200 customer service and administrative support staff to work through this emergency. Through the tremendous efforts of SMECO employees, contractors, and other utility workers, almost 62,000 of our customers have had their power restored in less than three days. We are proud of this achievement, and we will continue to work diligently to repair the rest of the damage and bring electricity back to all our customers.

Keep in mind that some SMECO customers may not have power restored for a few more days, because of the scope and nature of the damages caused by Isabel. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this extraordinary crisis.
