Oct. 20 — Elizabeth Smart's kidnappers fed her only one meal a day — often just bread — and kept the 15-year-old girl from running away by tying her between two trees with cables, according to her family's new book on the girl's ordeal.
ABC 4, the ABCNEWS affiliate in Salt Lake City, got an early look at the book, Bringing Elizabeth Home: A Journey of Faith and Hope, by Ed and Lois Smart. The book, to be released Oct. 28, provides some new details Elizabeth's abduction, and her nine months in captivity.
For example, on June 5, 2002, the night Elizabeth disappeared from her Salt Lake City home, her mother Lois Smart had burned the family's dinner. She opened the kitchen window to let air in. Later that night, prosecutors say Brian David "Emmanuel" Mitchell, who had once worked as a handyman in the Smart home, likely climbed in that very window and forcibly abducted Elizabeth from her bedroom.
Unable to Escape
Many people have asked the Smarts questions about why their daughter didn't escape.
"People ask us all the time why Elizabeth didn't try to escape … the answer is simple," the Smarts write in the new book. "She did try, and she couldn't get away."
In the book, they describe an episode where Elizabeth tried to escape, only to be caught and brought back under the threat of her life.
On March 12, Elizabeth Smart was found alive in a Salt Lake City suburb with Mitchell, 49, and his wife, Wanda Barzee, 57, who were taken into custody.
Prosecutors say that the couple held Elizabeth against her will at a crude campsite in the foothills above the Smart home until Oct. 8. Her captives then took the girl to California, where they remained until March 5, when someone recognized her on the street.
