"A planned $5.5 million expansion of Boise's geothermal system will loop through Boise State University's campus, cycling the naturally heated water back into the existing system.

By late 2011, a new pipeline will cross the Boise River to heat six university buildings, said Adam Park, Boise Mayor Dave Bieter's spokesman."

"The existing geothermal pipeline carries water from the Foothills to heat close to 55 buildings in Boise, Vince Trimboli of Boise Public Works said.

The expansion will potentially save Boise State $80,000 a year in heating costs, Park said. Nearly half of the project cost, $2.4 million, will come from the U.S. Department of Energy. The remainder of the money will come from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the city of Boise and BSU.

"It's vital that we invest in sustainable forms of energy over the long term," Park said. "By making use of a federal opportunity such as this, we can help save local taxpayer dollars year in and year out."
