The weather is getting warmer, and summer is just around the corner. Many parents struggle to find fun, educational activities for their children during summer vacation. The close of the school year, does not mean education should take a break; Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum offers four camps for children of different ages. Camps last five days from 9 am to 4 pm and cost $135.00.

Dirt Alert Camp, June 20- June 24, ages 7-9. All hands in! Imagine sand between your toes. How about ooey gooey mud between your fingers? Can you close your eyes and hear feet marching on dry soil? Experience these sensations and more as we explore from the ground up! Campers will test their green thumbs in the native garden, survey an archaeological site, and even try on natural camouflage. Try something new and messy, all in the name of science! Registration closes June 10!

Colonial Survival Camp, June 27- July 1, ages 8-11. Experience how early colonists lived and survived along the Patuxent River! Campers will leave the 21st century behind as they participate in activities of everyday colonial life through architecture, food preparation & cooking, candle & basket making, and creating fire using flint and steel! Campers will celebrate the end of camp by preparing and serving a colonial country feast to their families! Registration closes June 13!

Archaeology Explorers, July 11- July 15, ages 10-13. Have you ever wanted to be an archaeologist? Here’s your chance to spend a week working with archaeologists excavating an 18th century plantation site and learning how to identify the artifacts that you find. Discover what goes on in the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory as you help the curators and conservators clean, study, and preserve archaeological artifacts. Registration closes June 27!

Native Skills Camp, July 25- July 29, ages 10-13. Challenge yourself to learn the skills used by native people to live with the land! Explore the forest and marsh, play games involving stalking and tracking, and try to catch fish in the river. Learn how to make fire without matches, how shelters were built, and the tools and techniques of native people. Registration closes July 11!

My 2 boys have been going to these camps for the past 3 years and they loved them. My youngest on will be going again this year to the Native Skills camp. The kids have a great time with lots of "hands on" projects!:yahoo:
