MedStar St. Mary's Hospital in partnership with the St. Mary's County Department of Aging and Human Services is forming a community coalition focused on local youth alcohol use, binge drinking and alcohol related auto accidents. The Community Alcohol Coalition (CAC) is being established to lead a comprehensive effort addressing aspects of alcohol use as it affects youth in St. Mary's County. The CAC will hold an initial introductory meeting on January 24th, 2012, at 5 p.m. To attend please contact Jaclyn Shaw, grants coordinator, MedStar St. Mary's at 301-475-6184 or by email at Jaclyn_Shaw(at)smhwecare.com.

Areas of specific focus for the CAC will include awareness and education; prevention; intervention; and policy-making and legal responsibility surrounding youth alcohol use. The CAC is seeking involvement from local public, private and non-profit stakeholders and community members committed to making change in St. Mary's County.

"It's about creating change in attitudes and providing support and guidance for our youth related to their choices regarding alcohol use," said Cynthia Brown, human services division manager with the St. Mary's County Department of Aging and Human Services. "The Community Alcohol Coalition will be instrumental in developing comprehensive strategies that will incorporate all of our county's resources in a cohesive way. We are seeking input and involvement from all of the best and most qualified partners in our community," continued Brown.
