"For the first time in history, the U.S. military hosted an event for soldiers and others who don't believe in God Saturday in North Carolina, according to The Associated Press.

“Rock Beyond Belief” at Fort Bragg originally was scheduled for 2011 but fell through because of an impasse between organizers and base leadership over questions such as where it could be held. Officials relented after continuing accusations of bias.

Atheist soldiers began to lobby for the event after Fort Bragg allowed “Rock the Fort,” an evangelical Christian concert, to take place there in 2010.

Sgt. Justin Griffith, lead organizer of “Rock Beyond Belief,” said the event aimed to show that atheists and other secular believers have a place in institutions such as the military. "
