Black Spot

Black spot has already started on my roses and am wondering if anyone has a good remedy to stop or at least conrtol it before all the leaves are infected and my roses go bald.

Thank you

Usually black spot spreads because of too much moisture on the plant itself (it's a fungus). Water helps to spread it, so it's best not to water the plant from overhead.

Here's a good URL that covers most of what I've seen before on it:

I've read about a couple fungicides which are supposed to be very good - one is called PROTECT T/O, Dithane T/O, Mancozeb DG) - all good fungicides for Black Spot.

I'm a big fan of topical forums on the Net, such as Delphi and About. They allow you to zero in on information with other people with the same interests. For some reason, I like them better than Usenet newsgroups. (Probably because they are moderated usually, and aren't subjected to trolls and spam).

Here's another good URL -

I haven't had blackspot but some roses are more prone to it than others.  Try watering the roots only so the leaves stay dry.  If you want to wash pollen, aphids, spidermites, etc. off the leaves do it early  in the day so the leaves have a chance to dry before nightfall.  Also you might want to prune some of the inner canes so that air will be able to circulate inside the bush.

The baking soda method from one of Frank's url's is supposed to work, I would use a pressure sprayer and fully soak the leaves (early in the day); sulfur is another good remedy but I don't like powders.  Check the labels of products in the store.  There is a product called "Remedy" which is a pre-mixed baking soda solution but I haven't been able to find it yet, except on the net. Also, be sure to pick up the diseased leaves from the base of the plant and discard (not into the compost pile!).

Here's a site with pictures that will help identify pest and problems on roses:

Good luck and let us know what works!
