Barbarians in the Church

Thought you might like this Jimmy.

My mother must be in the Roman Catholic Hall of Fame. For seven decades, she has been a loyal member of the Church. We are talking daily Mass, the rosary, the whole deal. My mom is a true believer with a direct pipeline to God. If you need a favor, my mother is the one you should have praying for you.

So it is interesting to watch my mother following the priest scandal. Her group in the "Catholic Golden Age" club is generally appalled and confused. Their faith has not been shaken, but their confidence in the men running the church has been.

My mother is also in a difficult position because her only son has been leading the media charge in demanding that cardinals who allowed pedophile priests to roam be forced to resign. The pastor of my mother's church stopped her after Mass and suggested that I should give equal time to "good" priests. My mother didn't quite know how to answer that so she smiled and relayed the message to me. I then asked her: "Mom, does that mean when Republicans or Democrats do bad things I have to have good ones on to balance?" She said she didn't know and would I like another tuna sandwich.

According to a poll taken by Quinnipiac University, 70 percent of American Catholics want any high-ranking cleric that enabled child abuse to resign. And get this: Only 46 percent have a favorable opinion of their parish priest, although 90 percent would trust him around children.

What this poll says is that American Catholic priests are failing in their jobs. And I know the reason why.

First, my credentials. Altar boy for 10 years. Sixteen years of Catholic education. Many, many sins and encounters with frowning priests in the confessional. I still go to Mass every Sunday.

My experience has taught me that many priests are extremely interested in themselves and their power – a lot like most other human beings. The reason Cardinal Bernard Law of Boston will not resign in the face of overwhelming evidence that he aided and abetted gross crimes against children is that the man wants to keep his red hat. He likes the power and justifies his refusal to do penance by saying the best way to serve his church is to keep his power.

Of course, that's absurd. There's no way on this earth that Law can ever regain his moral authority. Perhaps in heaven.

I once taught at a Catholic high school in Florida, and the principal was a priest who ran around with teen-age boys all the time. Everybody knew something was strange, but the guy let it be known that he was shepherding troubled youths. Maybe he was. But this priest was so power mad and arrogant that he turned my stomach, and I left the teaching profession. He waved goodbye to me from the front seat of his brand new Lincoln Continental.

The thing is that many Catholics, including me, have had bad experiences with priests, but there is no higher court. The priest can pretty much do what he wants. As we now know, even criminal priests are sometimes protected because the bishops do not want public scandal in their dioceses.

My analysis of the priest situation has brought fear and loathing from some Catholics who don't like my tone. Some guy from Nevada sent me an e-mail saying, "Bill, you've gone berserk in your criticism of the Church." A man from Florida wrote: "Do you really think Cardinal Law knew what those priests were doing? You are just trying to get ratings, O'Reilly. …"

But most American Catholics understand what has happened and cannot defend it. My mother and her friends are watching closely to see if the pope, whom they love, will do anything. I told my mother not to get her hopes up.

There is a siege mentality in the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. The elderly men who run things see an immoral world bent on destroying their institution. They see the forces of liberalism trying to tear down tradition. They see barbarians at the gate.

But the truth is that the true enemies of the church are already inside the fortress. They have damaged the walls of faith, hope and charity, and they are still operating.

If ever there were a time for an exorcism …

Wow....that's some dope stuff...I actually read an article of his on his thoughts on Palestine/Israel. I found myself agreeing with him on just about all of it...maybe he's running to the center a bit too, as he has been accused by several members of this board, but I really like his thinking on at least those two issues I've read...thanks for posting this, Christy...See? I'm not so liberally-jaded that I can't take each issue at face value. :)

Jimmy, I bet if you read more of his commentary you'd find yourself agreeing with much of what he says.  You and him are on the same page when it comes to alternative fuel also.

Yeah the only place I'm really finding a disagreement with him is in his moral view. He's one of those that thinks that entertainers need to be held responsible for things they say/do if people imitate them or whatever. He also thinks that things like Opie & Anthony and WWF contribute to moral decay or some crap. I just have such a grey area in my mind when it comes to morals, and I LOVE those types of entertainment, I just can't buy into his views on that stuff. But more and more I'm getting into, I'll be honest.

Jimmy, I think kids do have the tendency to immitate and model the behavior of whatever celebrity it is they find a fascination with.  I had the whole (God I can't believe I'm admitting this) Madonna 80's look for a while.  (and that was just last month! :roflmao:  Kidding!)  Anyway, where I split paths with O'Reilly on that issue, is that it isn't the responsibility of the celebrities to be role models.  It's the responsibility of parents to either turn the crap off, or tell their kids that celebrities are morons.  I love Opie and Anthony, but don't get to listen to them much because normally my kids are in the car with me.  On O&A's tame days I keep it tuned in, but mostly I'm stuck with 104.1.  Actually, I did tune in yesterday to O&A because they were discussing the HBO "America Undercover" where this guy was going to raves and letting his kids do ecstacy.  My son and I watched it the night before, and O&A reinforced that this guy was a total jerk and should be stuck in prison.  Figured it would reinforce to my kid that everyone finds drug users to be morons, not just mean old mom!

Yeah that's a good idea...just don't let your kid hear O & A talk about going to the "Stairwell"....they are certainly not anti-drug...just the biggies :lmao:

And yeah that's basically what I meant to say. Sure kids imitate what they see in pop culture; I'd be stupid to say they didn't.  But, like you said, it's up to the parent to set the boundaries. So you used to dress like madonna? As long as you didn't start banging random men and fellating bananas at age 8, I'm sure it was all harmless fun. The problem I have is when a kid kills another kid using a wrestling move or burns a house down after watching Bevis & Butthead and people jump in and are so quick to blame the entertainment industry. Later, though, you find out these people are trash, the kids all have problems and most of the time, they are left on their own when this occurs...I don't know if it's a liberal or conservative thing to do to misapply blame in these circumstances (maybe neither?) but I HATE that...You wanna see my feathers ruffled, have someone come down on the other side of THAT arguement (and, Christy, don't do it just to get my dander up :nono: :) )

Jimmy, I think both sides tend to jump on the bandwagon.  What really amazed me (well not really, as Hollywood types are pretty dimwitted) was all the money being thrown in the democrats coffers during the last elections.  They seem to be oblivious of Tipper Gore and her crusade against the music industry in the 80's.

My personal view is that Republicans preach "family values" but really could give a rats behind over how people choose to live their lives.  Whereas the Dem's main agenda is to push legislation that helps a few but infringes on most.  Take gun control, take trying to pass law censoring the music industry, movie industry etc....
