Advice Needed

I've recently noticed a high-pitched winding noise in the front end of my car. Would any of you car savvy peeps know what could be causing the noise? I plan on taking it in for a physical once Christmas is over, but I'd like to have an idea as to what the problem is first (so I can pretend I know what I'm talking about).

Alternator? Does the sound change with RMP change?

Yeah, the pitch gets higher as I accelerate. Then I turn up the volume on my radio so I don't have to listen to it!

No, it's not a loose fan belt. I've heard what that sound like and it's definitely not that.
