TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — It took eight months to publicly reach a decision, but General Motors (GM) finally announced Thursday that it will build the Chevrolet Camaro, a retro-design muscle car that grabbed headlines at the Detroit auto show in January.

The move is an attempt to continue strengthening GM's product lineup, one of the key points in the ailing automaker's restructuring plan. GM is struggling to regain its footing in North America, its most important market, to help turn around the business.

GM lost $85 million in North America during the second quarter, which may seem like a huge number but is $1.1 billion better than a year earlier.

The Camaro won't go on sale until the first quarter of 2009.

I just have to wonder how successful muscle cars will be with gas prices they way they are and continuing to rise. :ohwell:

It'll be interesting to have that car back. The problem is that production models never look as cool as the concepts.

You can't buy it, Pixie. I won't have anywhere to tote my 6 babies with me when we go to the welfare office.

gas mileage on that thing will not be too bad itll be just like owning a truck or f body....i think its kinda ugly imo

I think Dodge messed up on their design. They should have made it look like a 69 Charger. They should have released a special General Lee model too. :howdy:

it doesn't stop people from asking me loads of questions about it and I get lots of looks where ever I go. So I think the design is AWESOME!!

Cool car. :yay: The article said Dodge is coming out with a new Challenger in '08 but I haven't seen pictures of it yet.

I got the same thing in my Magnum and hated that kind of attention. I got mine when it first came out, july of 04. I had one of 8 RT's in MD. I had the car 2 days chopped off the exhaust and put flowmasters on it, tinted my front windows and 11"s down the windshield. Put Graphics on it, two way pager alarm and remote start system, tv/dvd player, 2 12's in the back. I guess I was asking to attract the wrong attention. I went to North Beach one day and 3 black girls came up to me, asking about my car, while doind so one reached for my back door, told her don't touch my car. She opened my door and I flipped out. Told her to go to the dealer to look at one, really ticked me off. Dirty nasty girls trying to get in my car.

I have seen pics of the challenger it is not near as pretty as the Charger. At least thats my opion. It's a little too retro for me. I will see if I can find a pic and post it. :howdy:

I am not touching my car, I think it's perfect the way it is. I spent the money and got all the nice extras already installed. My kids love the dvd player and I can't tell you what life saver it was going on our trip to NY. :larry:
