So watching the Sugar Bowl last night i saw all of these commercials about a "Bahamavention." Apparently the commercials showed interventions with people that are workaholics, or are in desperate need of a vacation. They are really funny. After the 5th commercial i saw i started looking up the bahamas. Looks fabulous, has anyone ever been? I would love to be sitting on a beach right now instead of my desk at work. Would you suggest this as my next vacation spot? Which island? Any insight is appreciated.

I went to Freeport years ago. It was beautiful. I got a good discount through a travel agency on the hotel. If I remember correctly, it was only $90 a night and the room was bigger than my house.

You do need to watch out for the timeshare schemes though. I forget the scenario they used, but I got suckered in to it and it really was a pain in the butt.

You can do a bus tour of the island, go horseback riding, go snorkeling, take a booze cruise to a private island for a cookout and games, gamble at the casinos, and shop amongst other things. I ran out of time to finish all the things they had to offer.

The only downside to the trip was having to fly from Miami to Freeport in a puddle jumper. I was terrified :yikes:

We went a few years back. We did the snorkeling, pool/beach thing, rented a leaky little car and drove to a remote park, which I really enjoyed, shopped in Lucyaya, ate, drank, etc. . We flew straight from BWI and were there in two hours, so it's a short trip, which makes it nice. We stayed five nights and four days, which was not too long and not too short. We stayed in Lucaya.

I thought Freeport was trashier than Baltimore City. Maybe I didn't travel far enough away from all of the industrialism or maybe it was because it was Sunday and there was nothing really open. I’m sure that the whole island can’t be bad but I would definitely recommend trying one of the other islands if you had the choice.

There were some trashy areas, I agree with that. The bus tour stopped at the open air market and that place was actually kind of scary.

I think the hotel I stayed at was called the Zanadu (sp?) and that area was very nice but quite a hike to any activities. Things did seem to shut down early.

I rented a moped and ventured out to some remote parts of the island and it was so beautiful and peaceful.

I believe a passport is required now to go to the Bahamas, but I could be wrong. Getting a passport is on my list of things to do this month.

I've been to the Bahamas several times. A few times to Nassau and a couple times to Freeport.

There is almost no promotion of Freeport so there isn't a lot of development there. The resorts that are there are great - not very expensive. However, by the same token, there is virtually no night life and very little in the way of shopping and scenic tours.

On the other hand, Nassau is promoted very heavily. Thus, you have Atlantis (which is too rich for my budget) which has the large casino and ritzy accommodations as well as the largest water park I've ever seen. The boutique shops in the lobby of Atlantis make your eyes bug out - Prada, Chanel, Coach, Yves St. Laurent, Ralph Lauren - the list goes on and on. However, paying $16.00 for a cheeseburger and fries cured me real quick! (By the way, I didn't pay that - I looked at the menu before sitting down). You also have the Wyndyhm (sp?) Crystal Palace which is on Cable Beach and has a casino and moderate rooms - certainly not the glitz of Atlantis.

Nassau has a little bit more to offer such as the straw market downtown and the ferry/jalopy boat rides to Paradise Island. Atlantis is located on Paradise Island by the way. You can drive over or take a boat and it is worth seeing.

The Bahamian dollar is dollar for dollar with the US Dollar - at least last time I was down there it was.

We are actually looking to go back down there again in May. You definitely don't want to go there from June through November (hurricane season). You wouldn't be able to stand the humidity outside anyway. The absolute, hands-down best time to go there is late March and the month of April. Otherwise, the conditions are way too oppressive for me.

Hope this helps!

If you fly yes, if you go by boat I think you have one more year (unless they change the deadline again). Remember a passport has to be renewed every 10 years so while it's nice to have it, if you don't plan to go anywhere for a while it maybe be better to wait.

Cruise I took went to Nassau. It stunk IMHO. From what I hear Atlantis would've been better.
It's worth the $$$. The setting is a lasting memory. We never set foot off the resort for a week and never got bored for a minute.

my roommate is going to the Bahamas with her family and you do now need a passport to go there. She is going to the Atlantis so i cannot wait to hear what she thinks about it. Seems like everyone is having a "bahamavention" except me :(

Atlantis is wonderful. We went for 5 days 4 nights and never left the resort. I found Nassau to be nasty and thought Freeport was the same. I have been to Bahamas twice and the best visit was Atlantis. So much to do....we were never bored.

Gosh that sounds wonderful! you never left the resort? was there a lot to do or were you on more of a vacation where you just wanted to be on the beach all day? Either way sounds amazing. Its so gloomy here today. A beach in paradise sounds like heaven!

They had water slides, great places to eat, shopping, bars/clubs, numerous pools, beautiful beaches, water sports, casinos, celeb sightings, not to mention the amazing aquariums we literally saw something different every day and never felt the need to leave (we were also told by the bus driver that took us to the resort that muggings were "common in town" and from the looks of Nassau, driving through it, we knew we were not missing anything there)

Thanks for the information. I am definitely going to have a look at Nassau. I am in desperate need of a Bahamavention and maybe I can convince my boyfriend to take me for my birthday. Thanks.
