Last time we went, we stayed right on the boardwalk at the Atlantic Palace Suites. It's the only non-casino hotel right on the boardwalk so you are in the middle of everything. I want to say it was like $150 a night but we split it between 5 people so it wasn't that bad, and for the location ~ if you want to be on the boardwalk your only other choice is one of the casino hotels which charges almost double that rate. It's a timeshare hotel but they do rent to the general public as well.
