I tried it for about two hours (coming from Red Hat FC3) a month or so ago. Didn't like it, I didn't feel like I had control over the install and it went downhill from there. Ended up with OpenSuSe and am pretty happy with it.

Yep. I first jumped into Linux during the kids Christmas break. So far I've tried Ubuntu, Linux Mint, MEPIS, OpenSuse and Fedora before finally settling with Ubuntu. It works well for what I need: basic email, websurfing, and running my business (I'm an Independent Sales Rep for AVON). The most current version is codenamed Feisty, though if you're REALLY daring you can download and run their beta version, Gutsy, which is due for final release in Oct.

Do you know if there's a way to get the system specs for the machine through the ubuntu interface?

You mean like 'Device Manager'? That would be System - Preferences - Hardware Information.

Yeah - that's it.
At least that sounds like it.. the computer I'm working on is about 1500 miles away. I'll find out if that's what I'm looking for next time I get a call ;)
Thanks a lot.
