On the 19th of August (Sunday) I picked up a Hertz rental at 4pm and left my POV. I returned at 7pm and my POV had been towed away. I had to pay $190.00 in cash to get my truck back.

So don’t leave your vehicle in the parking lot even for three hours or David Long will have it towed away!

There is always one of you in the crowd! Thanks for sharing your wisdom and FYI ~ I didn't see the signs because I parked in front of Hertz and I had NEVER been in that parking before in my life! The point is that Dave Long is an a$$ and don't park your car in his precious parking lot. You reap what you sow and I’m sure Dave will get his seven fold…

Why not accept some of the responsibility?

As for the bowling alley, if you had 100 spots for your customers, and 30 of those were constantly filled with people storing their car for a week, wouldn't you want to do something about it?

Personally, I think that bowling alley is a disgusting broken down dump, and I will not go there. The parking thing is just one more nail in the coffin for them.

If I was a leasee and found out he was towing my customers vehicles I'd be pissed. Hewitts, who runs the Hertz office, is fully aware of the policy. That's why they put up signs.

If you leased space that included parking, then customers of another business used the parking you pay for, wouldn't you want to do something about it?

Yes, but he said he parked by Hertz, so I assumed he was in one of their alotted spaces. In circumstances like that I usually ask if it's ok to leave my car somewhere for X amount of time first, espcially if I'm in tow-happy Northern Virginia.

I do accept responsibility and I never said I didn't!

I simply wanted the readers to know and not make the same mistake I did. You simply are hijacking a thread because obviously you haven’t better things to do. Nice touch however with how dumpy the place is…

Nevertheless, I went back after the truck was towed and saw the signs. When its 3:59 and the store closes up at 4pm the last thing you are doing is reading freaking signs….

Anyway, I went back to Hertz and saw the faded out letter size sign mentioning towing. I never saw it, but yet I take responsibility that I didn’t have a ride to drop me off, and that I completely didn’t see any signs. Karma is alive and well. In addition, my company said we will now use enterprise. Is it Hertz (Hewitts Problem?) not really, but its piss poor business that a person can’t come back three hours later and retrieve their vehicle.

not sure how close hertz is to the bowling alley; however, did you think to mention to hertz that you planned to leave your car? if so, they should have told you that towing is enforced if left on the bowling alley lot. if you didn't bother to ask or ignore the signs(if only for 3 hours) then you have to take responsiblity for your actions.

My bad that I didn’t ask… Yet again, lesson learned that maybe someone else can learn from and save $190.00.

FYI~ the tow driver said normally the vehicles are tagged and towed after 24 hours. He said my truck wasn’t tagged and he didn’t understand why he had to tow it. He didn’t mind the $190.00. lol…. This particular towing company is the only company left in Saint Mary’s that will respond to calls from the bowling alley fwiw. Meaning Mr. Long is hurting other business (towing companies) for conducting shady practices.

My question is why did you have to pay to get your vehicle back? Who impounds cars in St Mary's besides the police? Were you in the Hertz parking area? I just don't understand how someone can have a car towed if it's not in front of/ in the parking area of their business. What am I missing here?

Willie's Towing was the name of the company. I was in the furthest parking spot from the bowling alley in front of Hertz. Technically it was the last spot of the bowling alley that no one would park to walk to the bowling alley. The irony is that the bowling alley is always dead and I’ve never seen more than six cars parking there. It just seems shady, and to pay in cash just sends a red flag. Not a VISA or check accepted although I can understand no checks, but it just seems odd to pay in cash.

Willie's charged my son ALMOST $300 for towing his car and 4 days storage (the day they towed the car, the two days they were closed, and the day we went to pick it up) for towing the car from Sheetz, on 235 to Willie's. Yet Kevin's Towing only charged me about $30 to tow my truck down from St Leaonard to Cheseldine.

I think the whole thing is indicative of small minded business management by Hertz/Hewitt. Letting a run of the mill bowling alley walk all over its customers will do well in generating new clients. As I’ve stated already, my company just made it clear that we will no longer do business with hertz due to the fact that it’s an inconvenience to the customer that they can’t be allotted three hours to come back and pick up a POV. I’ll be sure to tell the folks at NAVAIR as well.

Say what you will, but it’s also an indicator of a small town mentality to even suggest that this is going on. Furthermore, it’s only the tip of the iceberg in terms of shady business practices within this county. This is nothing….

Neither one of the businesses in question will be seeing any more of my $, so it's a moot point for me. :killingme U-Haul corporate sucks, and Hewitt's attitude is basically,

While the folks here are correct in pointing out that there are warning signs inside Hewitt's, that sort of crap shouldn't be necessary. If the bowling alley is going to be nazis about towing cars, there should be large signs outside. And if it's true that only one towing company will handle their business, that should tell you something about the arrangement.

$190.00 for that tow is outrageous! I wonder how much of a kick back the bowling owner is getting for that. I say lets organize picketers and picket the bowling alley until he stops this unfair practice. That tow should be no more than $100.00.

Here's what we do. We go and take up all of his parking spots, then as soon as willie arrives on the lot, we get in our cars and drive away. sooner or later, willie will get tired of arriving at the bowling alley and leaving empty handed. Tom, thanks for bringing the topic back on point. If I can save one person the $190 then it was worth the post.

fwiw, I emailed the judge as a friend to let him know what’s going on in his county. I’m not asking for my money back, but rather I just wanted to get the word out there. I even contemplated posting for a week because I knew I had no legal rights.

I do take responsibility, but I can still be pissed! I’ve been called whiner which I find hilarious. It becomes more personal when anyone has to dish out $190

It's one thing when a person commits an overt act of wanton and willful disregard for other peoples property. However, when a person makes an innocent mistake, and is doing so in the course of conducting buisness, then I think the predatory nature of this bowling alley needs to be brought to the forefront. Your not the only person to have had this happen to them. No, it has never happened to me, but has to intelligent people I work with. This isn't about protecting a parking lot, this is about "I got you!" That is what this bowling alley owner is doing. I just wish there were a legal way we could get him back!

I'll let you know what the Judge says.

I remember pulling up to Hertz and I really didn’t see any signs. I do believe they are posted southward on the opposite side of the polls where I parked. I parked as far north on the parking lot as possible and closest to 235. If you drive by it, it’s the one spot at the very end right next to where Hertz parks their rentals. I don’t believe there are any signs over there.

However, after my wife blasted me about the sign on the door I felt pretty stupid, but I really did check in at 3:59 in a hurry. I was just rushing for my trip because I had numerous things to do to catch a 06:00 flight out of DCA. It’s just disheartening in a way sometimes to deal with the antics here in what I think is a beautiful place to live.

I picked the car up at 3:59pm on Sunday. Left for the airport at 3 am Monday to catch a flight at 6am.

What happened is that I got back to MD from New York on Saturday and I was running around getting things done before a trip to San Diego. Just in a hurry type thing...

The problem has been and continues is that Enterprise doesn't offer one way rental to and from BWI or DCA. We have been using Hertz because they provide a one way service. In addition, using the corporate code Enterprise beats Hertz price every time. So all it would take for Enterprise to run Hertz out of here is to provide a one way rental to or from the airport. Again, my manager is pissed over the Hertz parking debacle to the point he doesn’t want to use them anymore.

The very first thing I noticed when I picked up a U-Haul there years ago was the signs in the parking lot. There isn't enough parking lot for the bowling alley alone and when you add Hertz, Napa, and Dick Heads Electronic Repair into the mix this sort of thing happens.

There was a base wide email about 5 years ago warning people about this too.

Esperanza bowling center has been the lone bowling alley (not including Pax River and Dunkirk) for a good many years now. Dave Long knows it and he knows what customers he has, knows it. I stopped going there the first time they told me I had to give them one of my shoes before I could rent a pair of theirs because people were stealing them! That was 12-13 years ago.

Long knows he has the only public alley in this area, so he can do whatever he wants. While growing up in the Greater Cincinnati/Northern KY area, all bowling centers opened by 8:00AM on the weekends. Long might open by noon on Saturdays. Unless you are in a league during the week, you won't see them opening until 6:00PM. And now he has cars towed which may be parked in front of his place. What, he has someone watching "his" parking lot 24/7? Too bad the St. Mary's County Department of Economic and Community Development won't entice a company/group (such as AMF) to come here and build a modern, state-of-the-art bowling and entertainment complex (take a look at Jillian's in Arundel Mall next time you're there).

Anyway, he is clearly not up to code in terms of signs and language on them. (If in fact he is supposed to have signs made IAW state law as the poster above stated)

First, let me tell you if you do a case search, Mr. Long has been taken to court for towing someone's car and Mr. Long had to pay the man back!! Take him to court!!! He doesn't have a lawyer in the family anymore - he's been disbarred!!!

Second, my boss had his car towed and called the bowling alley about it and all he heard from them is how you people from NAVAIR moved here and caused the roads to be widened and part of their parking lot is 235 now! You get what you deserve (note my boss happens to work at NAVAIR but is a St. Mary's County native)(he'll never use Esperanza Lanes again).

Mr. Long may be getting a kick back from Willie's towing, but Mr. Hewitt isn't. He has talked to the Longs (husband and wife) over and over again and it is no use. He has no recourse. Please note that all the overflow from the evening bowling leagues park in Mr. Hewitt's lot. Mr. Hewitt does not tow them to get even with Mr. Long because it doesn't hurt Mr. Long it hurts others.

Esperanza is hardly ever open, their leagues sizes are getting smaller, he did away with the youth league on Saturday morning (he said it was too hard to get up on Saturday morning for the kids because he's open late on Friday night). They don't bring in enough money, so he's closed on Sat a.m. The kids that could went to the base, and the others went to Calvert.

If any of you have a solution, we'd all be willing to hear it.

Actually it was in the county charter that no other bowling alleys were allowed in St marys County........pays to be a good ole boy eh?
