Which make better pets? I don't want a lot of either so which works better in smaller groups, are easier to keep. I think ducks are cuter but I'd be afraid that living on the water they'd swim away? I only want like 2 or 3 and there's a chicken coop on the farm already.

...what the attraction of a chicken or a duck would be as a pet?

If you get them as a baby and raise them there I believe they come back to the same spot every year if they do leave.

I'm not exactly sure what the attraction is other than they're small and I can keep them close to the house. I don't want goats or anything like that that I'd have to keep out in the barn and let out in a field.

Pixie I've had both as pets when I was living in LaPlata... ducks are cuter and quite friendly (at least Pekings are), they'd let me pick them up and pet them, etc.. and they followed me EVERYWHERE  However, they are MESSY. If you have water for them it will need to be changed frequently as they like to dip their food in water to eat it... also it's true about them chitting every 7 seconds... if they are close to the house, then you are trackign in all this unsanitary "chit" into the house.
Chickens make for great pets and would get my vote because they are less needy and less maintenance. They make for great pets - but not soo great if you get a male and have neighbors or get one that crows all day. Also the female hends willgive you eggs you can use for cooking. The only use I found for duck eggs was for baking cakes or a meatloaf where the consistance was a little different and lots of yoke.
Most important with both of these animals is to make sure it is safe at night from opposums, foxes and other critters. The chicken will roost itself up off the ground safely, however with the ducks I had lock them in a big enclosure everynight for their safty.
Good luck :yay:

I vote for chickens. I agree with Dems. Ducks are cute and all, but they are messy little shiat machines. I don't know that I'd ever get ducks again. Hell, I'd even take geese over ducks. Chickens are great. They are funny to watch, and they lay eggs. Ducks lay eggs too...but duck eggs are :dead:. You can get bantams...they're cute!!!

Why not get bunnies? They had some cool lookin ones at the fair last month.
Also if your gonna get ducks, get one of the black ones that have a mohawk for a doo. There is one that I see down at Stoney's in Broomes Island the thing looks soo cool.

First off, this is not a internet personaily, this is me. I don't put my personal bussiness on the net for all to see. I am far from being "holier then thou", but I don't put my bussiness on the street. Its not me you need to apologize to, it is your children. Just think of what you are putting them through.
You have no Idea who I am, or know any of my personal bussiness, so you have no right saying anything about me. You need to grow up. You have children to raise.
Enough said, when you grow up you might understand.

Well I have to go. Bantering with an idiot is fun. Even more intresting when your groupies come to your defence.
If you all don't like my spelling errors, have Vari put spell check on this fourm.
I don't have time for such trivial things as spelling on a internet fourm.
Please tell me this post was poking fun at yourself.

But you have time to concern yourself with my entire life right down to my boyfriend's history and concern for my children. Wow, love me or hate me it's still an obsession. :boing:

I deleted all my posts with his name. I can't do anything with being quoted.

Only a couple of my so called friends knew. I gave one person WAY too much credit when it came to decency. Live and learn.
Pix, I've got news for you: I am the LAST person to know anything (except for Sharon - she's the only one who cares less than me). So if I know what your drama is, then EVERYONE does.

As I explained in a private thread, this is a case of "eating one of your own" if you will. I WAS foolish to think that people with their own damn drama would keep their lips closed. Live and learn. :smoochy:

He's lost a few chickens to the foxes this year but no ducks.
That's because the foxes leave the ducks alone....they get eaten by opposums. :huggy:
Pixie on a chicken.
I can't find anything good for "Pixie+duck" so I say chickens win by default.
Um....you know that is a duckling right?
:lmao: But I think we're way past the chicken/duck argument now.

I don't know why everyone's getting all spun up yet anyway. There's still plenty of time for my fickle self to change my mind... Chances are I'll freak out and call it quits. If I'd actually lived at all the places I'd considered I'd have been foolish not to just buy an RV and be full gypsy.

I should just let this thread die, but unfortunately I couldn't get to it any sooner than this. First off, Pixie and I had our differences on the net. Once we met it person it was crazy how good of a friend she became. She is a great person. She has a very good job, responsible of taking care of children, pets, and her own home. With all of the responsiblities in her life, I am surprised that she is able to handle all of it. She even has time for a boyfriend, which is great! I think highly of her and have met her boyfriend as well and I think highly of him too. She is a wonderful person and I would never allow anyone to trash talk her. How dare someone come on this website and has sunk so low to go by another alias? How demented and mentally critical does someone have to be to do something like that? Its a shame and I am sorry pixie had to go through this. :(
