Anyone know of any place around St Mary's that does small electronic soldering....I have a CDI box off my sons quad that has a small wire broken in to...There is only about 1/4" of the wire sticking out of the box to grab on to...The other wire is long enough to get stripped and soldered....Too much of a task for me and I don't have the right tools....I would replace it and I probably will have to but the damn thing is $400.00...Any help?

Any hardawre store, get an el cheapo soldering kit and do it yourself. Soldering isn't black magic. Just make sure you use rosin core solder for electronics. Acid core is corrosive. Also pick up a selection of heat shrink tubing and use that to insulate the solder joint afterwards. Everybody should have a soldering iron!

Where are you located? I would have a look at it. One recommendation, though, once you get it reconnected cover it up with a blob of epoxy or something to keep it from flexing and breaking off again closer down.

Any idea on the gauge of the wire?

Sounds like a good idea for a gathering, a conference. Who's got the beer?

Or what metal?

Thanks to all that replied...There are some catches to all of this...We need it before Sunday....We have a race on Sunday and need this bad....This is a miss we have had for a while and couldn't find it until last night...I have attached some pictures and drew a circle around the wire...It is the black & yellow wire....

When and where?

I have a soldering iron but this is something I want done right...The wire sticking out of the box is very small and only 1/4" long....Not much to grab on to...I'd rather not tackle it....

I am in the Leonardtown/Clements area but I can be anywhere if I can get it fixed...

Any idea on the gauge of the wire?

Not sure what size wire it is but it is about 1/16" OS....Very small..

Or what metal?
I have beer.

Not sure of that either...

I can be any where or drop it anywhere....I just checked with my supplier in Ohio and they won't replace it so if I don't get it fixed by tomorrow, I have to overnight one...

Is that box a sealed unit, or can you get to the wires on the inside?

Sealed....That's why I won't mess with it....Very short wire sticking out...Not much to grab on to...

Just talked to DR, if he doesn't like the look of it I'll grab it and throw it (gently!) on the soldering station. :yay:

I wouldnt solder it together, it will just break off again. I would use an "enviromental splice".

That also lets me out because I don't even know what an environmental splice is...:lmao: It really didn't break off. It was rubbed by the shrink wrap and broke in two. The wire didn't come out of the box. It broke off just above the box...

Find any 10 year old that has done a 'mod' to his game system.. he'll be able to hook you up!!

I dunno, don't think my e-splice crimpers will fit in there.

Looks like you have some wear on the black w/ white as well...

I would use a thermal stripper on the broken wire and leave 1/16th of and inch near the CDI - and lay the conductors straight-on into each other with barely any to no twist (not enough to do) and then solder it... unfortunately, you only have one shot because of the length of the conductors to solder. Then use the epoxy filled heat shrink to environmentally seal it...

Not many options there!

If all you are planning on doing is band-aiding for the race, just fix the one and get a new CDI.

I would cut all the suspect wires and splice them back with epoxy filled heat shrink and keep it as a spare. It is only a matter of time before that one rubs through as well!

Good luck to your son at the race! (I use to race 250 B up until I was 3o something :yay:) Is he District 7 or MAMA?

I think the fix will be OK...Like I said, the covering around the bundle of wires is a little too long and it chafed and eventually cut the wire in two....I think I'll cut some of that covering off so it won't happen again....Thanks....He races D7..He's been doing real well....Won the championship in 06 in "C", stepped up to "B" in 07 and had a healthy lead in the points and had a freak accident in a practice and broke his leg...That took care of 07...Getting ready for "A" this year...Whole new ball game now....Ran 4 motos since the leg thing and got 2 firsts and 2 seconds equaling a 1st and 2nd overall for the 2 races....Still going to be an uphill battle with those "A" guys...:lmao:

Back in '02 I went down big-gulp (3 ' off the ground - sailed about 30') during practice - broke a front fork spring, front end compacted and never came up -I went over the handlebars :yikes:

I picked the bike up and went back to the pits - others helped me get the front forks un-stuck and up on the trailer... I drove home and unhitched the trailer in the garage...

I called my wife and she was working at a emergency health care place in Waldorf... she convinced me to drive up there. After a few x-rays and a ton of wound cleaning; I had a concussion, bruised sternum, lung, kidney and ribs!!! :lmao: I had no clue I was that messed up.

A few weeks later I was taking the front forks apart and my boy who was about 4 or 5 asked if I was going to race this weekend... I told him no. He said "good, I do not like to see you wreck and get hurt Daddy" - well, that was the end of that!

Now - this is the same kid who asked to race a few years later! I have diverted him!! But we both ride ATV's and love it!

Sorry to hi-jack the thread, but good luck to the boy and hope the CDI gets repaired! I work in DC so in a pinch I could get it done for you as well!

No room for strippers on the bottom wire, didn't have epoxy filled heat shrink, but I did lay them straight on and used a double layer of heat shrink topped with silicon tape.

There is a little wear on the black & white one too...

You're good to go Dup. See you around 2? We can pm location etc. I put an insulating layer on the worn one too. That sure looked like a clean cut and it's hard to imagine heat shrike wearing through wire. The insulation maybe. Are you sure you don't have a saboteur lurking around?:lmao:
