If you have a iPhone
Please post your findings in this post: iPhone users, where are you at? (http://forums.somd.com/computers-technology-internet/125014-iphone-users-where-you.html)

This thread has turn into a debate about other cell phones and who owns what cell phone tower.

---------------------------------------------------------

Within the next month my contract is up with Verizion and I am looking else where. Verzion's doesn't like Apple, Verzion phones don't sync up to Mac (other than transfering phone book contacts).

Who has a iPhone?

How good is the coverage with the iPhone/AT&T?

I live in Piney Point, How is the coverage out there? How about in the the Ranch Club, I have family that lives there.

I don't have any complaints about AT&T service, but I do not have the iphone. Those who do have the iphone have not been complaining about the service.

It is comparable to Verizons service, I don't know about in piney point, I know when I had AT&T once I passed the last PAX gate it basically went dead, no signal. iPhone as good as any other phone, just fancy, the wi-fi feature is great since you can get internet and it doesn't charge you minutes or service charges.

What has me leaning toward the iPhone is that the fact i can sync it up to my MacBook Pro. I have a calendar on my MBP that would be handy instead of trying to remember dates off the top of my head.

There is only one Windows operating system left in the house and thats there collecting dust... my GF owns an iMac 20", and I am looking at buying a iMac 24" or Mac Pro when I buy a my first house, so I can start building a small studio.

I live several miles south of Gate 3 and my phone works in my house.

Have you tried any of the Palm, Blackberry, or Windows Mobile based phones? They'll be a hell of a lot cheaper than an iPhone.

Daughter had AT&T/ Cingular and it wasn't worth a crap South of the base. She could use it at work, but couldn't receive or make phone calls from the house, or my house.

There are very few towers down here.. one at St Mary's college and one at Buzzy's..

IF I remember correctly the one at St Mary's is Verizon, and Buzzy's is Nextel.

http://www.cellreception.com/search.php?page=1

The only AT&T comment i can find says 0 out of 5.. NO reception, can't connect to the Verizon tower at St Mary's.

I may have it backwards.. Buzzy's was Cingular, and AT&T acquired Cingular maybe?? Have to ask my daughter.. whatever her phone was it didn't work at all South of the base..

"A" has a Cingular phone and it seems to work ok down by Webster. However, she definitely has more issues with dropped calls than I do on Verizon.

I even have a couple bars at Point Lookout and everyone on here knows that is in the middle of nowhere. Not saying AT&T is the best, but I don't have any issues with service. It could just be she had a bad phone.

I'm thinkin I got my story backwards.. the tower at Buzzy's must be Cingular, which is now AT&T..

Daughter must of had a NEXTEL phone.

Verizon has a new ENV that is supposed to be as good if not better than the iPhone.. friggin EXPENSIVE though $499

I can't find the page I used, but you used to be able to search for cell towers, and when you clicked on them it used to tell you who owned the tower, and which cell companies they leased to.

For example.. RIDGE has a 'cell tower' on their firehouse, but it's for their use, it's not leased by any phone company..

My hubby has an iPhone and we're in Calvert. No problems at all.

I have a Blackberry with AT&T and only have one problem, the Edge network (media program) is unbelievable slow. I haven't met anyone with an I Phone yet so don't know if they are happy. I just think they are super expensive to buy then it's something like $100/month for service.
I get pretty good reception around Piney Point, but lose signal in the Landings and a couple of other spots. Otherwise it's pretty good everywhere else.

I love my Sprint BlackBerry....the 3G data is super fast! haha...seriously though. The iphone would probably be your best bet Matt, the BlackBerry doesnt have nearly the support for Mac as it does for Windows.

well I do have verizon now. I do know cell phones aren't that great in southern md. I am trying to figure out if the iPhone works in southern md. I only ask about the iPhone and its service. I don't want to hear about a blackberry or cell phone towers. you can be standing next to a verzion cell phone tower and not get a signal.

The VZW voyager matches the iPhone for $100 - $200 less. Touch screen and all. Plus it has a full keyboard when you fold it out.

That's the one I've been looking at for my next phone, but I'm not sure it's worth upgrading from my XV6700. BTW, I noticed that they have an XV6800 now...

isn't supported with apple... there isn't a phone that is Mac OSX capable.

i tried that thing in the store... 3 different stores... web page searching was horrible.

to type in the box you have to flip it open and use the key pad inorder to type in a web address... at least thats the way it was demo-ed in two of the stores.

Well, I THINK iPhones only work with AT&T... and it won't matter how GREAT a phone it is, if you don't have service it's a $500 paperweight.

If you have to stick with Verizon look at the Voyager (?) for an option.. it's VERY much like an iPhone, including the price tag.

She'll probably make me buy a Nextel phone, or the Korean iPhone knock-off.. the iProbe

As I said in the other tread - my sis-in-law has the iPhone - no Mac to go with it and she likes it as long as she has coverage. In non-fringe areas it blows; no coverage/no service. She does not get off the beaten path (major highways and small towns) that often so for her it is a non-issue.

When we were all back home at her parents over the holidays she had no coverage (50 miles south of Pittsburgh), so she had an expensive MP3/electronic organizer! Her cousins were thrilled to see the expensive iPhone that did not work up there! :sarcasm:

In this area, IMO, and based on the CONUS travel I have done, you cannot beat Verizon for their coverage... I have never had a coverage problem.

The only thing that scares me about the iPhone is the report of broken screens - it does not take much of a drop to shatter the glass. The phone will still work, but the glass screen will cost you ~$200 to replace! :ouch: One of the engineers here dropped his off his desk, with a protective case, onto a thin carpeted floor and it still broke! There are a TON of posts online about this.

Good Luck!

Wireless services are designed for outdoor coverage. This is particularly true in sparsely populated areas such as here. There will never be the number of towers needed to support in building coverage in areas such as ours, because the economics do not support it as they do in the city.
My wife Kim and I offer a very unique service in "The County" of enhancing cell/PDA/iPhone and EVDO wireless services. We provide booster amplifier systems and antennas, We provide these with expert advice and consulting as well. We are experienced radio engineers and provide solid solutions that work inside buildings and vehicles.
