View Full Version : PSA: Please Use Your Vehicle Headlights!

As a service to your fellow drivers, please turn on your headlights during dawn, dusk, and inclement weather, especially when it is foggy. It does not cease to amaze me the number of people that I have driven past in Southern Maryland that do not have the sense of common courtesy to turn on their headlights while there is poor visibility. Headlights are not there just to help the driver of the vehicle, but also to help others on the road be aware of your presence. Trying to turn left and right on to busy two-lane roads on a foggy day is extremely difficult when a person cannot anticipate an oncoming vehicle. Many folks also tend to use the parking lights instead of their headlights and again, in a foggy situation those lights are still very difficult to see.
So please practice headlight "etiquette" and help prevent accidents for yourself and others.
Thanks!

I 100% agree.

I especially think that anyone who drives gray/silver/champaign colored cars would know that they can't be seen very well on cloudy days, much less when it's foggy or raining. We have the headlight/wiper law for a reason.

Tommy Lee Jones - Men In Black - 1997
"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it. Everything they've ever "known" has been proven to be wrong. A thousand years ago everybody knew as a fact, that the earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew that the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on it. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow."
You are asking people to use common sense. You're statements about the hazards of driving in poor visibility are correct, but will fall on deaf ears. Another quote:
Judge Chamberlain Haller: That is a lucid, intelligent, well thought-out objection.
Vinny Gambini: Thank you, sir.
Judge Chamberlain Haller: Overruled.
You might as well ask people to start taking responibility for their own actions, use turn signals, not throw trash on the road, move to the right lane when driving slow.
So all in all I agree with somd newbie, but it won't do any good. Have a good day, and try not to let the idiots get you down.

I think these people's attitude must be "well, I can see fine and these lights aren't going to help ME see things because it isn't dark out"
Doesn't occur to them that it makes THEM more visable.
But I could be wrong, I'm not one of those people

It's a law in Maryland -- if you are using windshield wipers, you have to have your headlights on.
The other is common sense, but not everyone has that.

In Maryland, use of you parking light is legally limited to when you are parked.
Go ahead and ram them and then say "Gee Officer, thye had their parking lights on so I thought they were parked."

Driving with lights in inclimate weather is a smart thing. It's the law if your wipers are on. In NY lights had to be on at least 1/2 hour after sunrise and 1/2 hour before sunset. I have no idea if that's true here.
THAT SAID: I have automatic lights on my truck. They work very well to turn the lights on for 95% of the above conditions. Once in a while, the sensor is fooled, and it takes a few minutes for me to realize that, you just become so used to having the lights do their own thing. So, there are times where my lights should be on, but they are not. My bad.

Lights on when wipers on, is a MD law, but the police wont stop you for just no lights on, its a secondary offense, they have to have something else to pull you over for, like seatbelt offense, speeding etc.

Partly true. If a cop sees a Crown Vicr with lights out plowing into a crowd of race fans after dark, they can pull the car over.

Tell that to the cop in Calvert county that just drove by FB. How the hell can you expect joe citizen to follow the laws if the cops don't.

And while we are on the subject of headlights, how about having the common courtesy of dimming your high beams when approaching an oncoming vehicle. I don't know how many retards either don't turn down their high beams until they are right on top of you or don't do it at all.

They're not always high beams. I've flashed people to dim before only to have them show me how bright their lights get. sux. My car sits close to the ground though. That might have something to do with it.

They think because there is a grass median between lanes that it doesn't matter..... I get that on 4 all the time.

That's a side effect of not having a recurring vehicle inspection. Lights go out of kilter and the driver either doesn't know or care enough to fix it, because he doesn't have to.
Wont your headlights let you see me?
why I gotta be drainin my battery?

It's not a secondary offense. We can stop you solely for that reason.

I think someone's sarcasm meter is broke, anyway this is a huge pet peeve of mine too. Turn your freakin lights on when the sun is starting to set, wtf will it hurt? Then you won't be that A$shole that is the only one driving with your lights off after the sun has gone down and is impossible to until the last second.
Why I gotta wait for a break in traffic to pull onto the road? You got brakes!
interestingly enough, many people feel the same way you just joked about.. except, they are for real.

Why not start pulling them over? or is it not worth the time/paperwork? - or are there bigger fish to be caught?
I see it more and more in Charles County during commuting times and it is very aggravating.

it wont help.
there is always the guy that just picked up a couple dates from the walmart spandex isle and has them packed in the back seat of his Honda Civic.
his headlights will be pointing right at your face in the monster truck.
then as you pass him, you get blinded by the light from the sparks coming from his back bumper as it scrapes the road.
