anybody else get it?, just got it last night. All those marathon nights of playing Halo3 and Cod4 has killed it I think. I would send it in, but my warranty is void due to me opening up the case to get the drive to cough up my Gears of War game back.....most likely due to me setting the console from horizontal to vertical. I never heard of the RRoD and didn't think of anything bad happening way back then, so I didn't care about voiding the warranty, I just wanted to play again.
Anyway, I opened the console up again, sprayed all the dust out, put it back together, and powered on. It worked......for about 5 minutes and froze on me. It'll work for few minutes at a time and freeze up every time, but no RRoD. So now what do I do? There's some idiot on YouTube (if you have RRoD) that wraps towels around it to heat it up for 30 minutes, let's it cool and it works for a couple of days.....and he does it again.....but some people have claimed that it eventually fries your xbox360 after doing it too many times. I'm at work, so I can't post the link to the video right now.

That sucks. I'm on my 3rd 360. The last two suffered the 3 red lights, as I understand it, the chip overheats and it's fried. Regardless, you gotta get a new one. I had a replacement plan at Best Buy, so I saved some $$ there and I upgraded to the Elite. When I was checking out the girl mentioned that a few people said the Elite systems aren't as problematic??? Not sure, but it sucks regardless. Good Luck.

Dont do try the you tube thing. Just send it back to MS. Dont mention anything about voiding the warrenty. the RRoD has a 3 year factory warrenty from the date of manufacture.
If they dont fix it. then oh well. Your still in the same boat.
If they do fix it, you're money

Well the Elite systems have only been out for a couple of months, who knows how long they'll last, hopefully they've resolved the problem. Most of the workers at BestBuy don't know what they're talking about so I wouldn't trust their opinions.
I do like the black Elite version, and it also has HDMI. But if I buy the Arcade version it's about $200 less because I already have the HardDrive and the old Component cables. I'll spend a couple of nights trying to fix my old one since I'm stubborn and I've gotten it to work somewhat.

Got it in Jan. Doubt they fixed it but according to the article I have 3 years for the RRod. Anything other than that is $99. Ours has some hours on it
Is the intercooler worth it to try and fend off the RRoD?

I had a launch release 360 that bricked on me a year after I had it. I swapped it at Best Buy (I had the extended warranty), and has lasted me since.
However, I sense the end is near for this one, as well. It's considerably louder at times(fan noise), and I've been getting quite a few dirty disc errors as well...the dics are just fine. All precursors to it's imminent death. It's all heat related...the units get too hot for too long and result in warping the motherboards...or so I've read.
The Elites are supposed to have fixed this. A friend of mine bought an elite around Christmas (he is on his 4th 360), and he says it's a bit quieter, but most importantly it blows cool air out of it's exhaust, even after playing it for a few hours. A big difference over the older versions...along with the HDMI. :yay:
I'll be picking up an elite the day my current Box bricks...if not before.

No.
Everything I've read (and been told) about them said to stay away from them. The best you can do is make sure you don't place the Box inside an enclosed entertainment unit. The more air around it, the better.
Also, don't keep it on when you're not playing it.

what they should do is build the xbox360 case with some filters that keep the dust away from the insides. You should see how much dust accumulates in the heat sinks and fans, just like in a PC. We do dust and run air purifiers in our house, but you can't keep all the dust away from it.
Is it worth it to buy the Xbox Elite version just to get it in black and get a 120GB Hard Drive? They say the hard drive costs $179, I don't really download any movies and usually delete most of the demos after trying them out, so I don't need it. I guess if I really have to buy a new one (I think I will last only a week without one), I will have to deal with it being white and slap my Halo3 face plate on and my original 20GB hard drive that still works with my profile and all my achievements, games, demos and account settings.
Looking up prices at best buy:
Arcade $279
Premiium $349
Elite $449
At least I'll get those 6 classic Arcade games I've played millions of times before....like Pacman :bigwhoop:

If you're fine with the 20GB hard drive, then you should stick with something cheaper than the Elite...especially if HDMI isn't a big deal to you. I want the bigger drive for the HD movie rentals, musice storage, etc..
The biggest reason for wanting an Elite (besides HD space) is that they are supposedly to be the first of the XBoxes to carry the new Falcon 65nm chipset on board...as opposed to the original, Zephyr 90nm chipset. Word is that all 360's will eventually have the new chipsets...but the elites would be the first released with it.
The 65nm is supposed to be a faster chip, but more importantly runs MUCH cooler than the old one.
It seems that the only way you can tell which chipset the 360 has installed (without opening the box) is to look at the UPC panel on the back of the box...to the left of the bottom right bar code is the power statistics. You'll want the one that says 175W...as opposed to 220W.
So,no matter which system you want, the thing to look for is that wattage difference.

I did notice a lot of dust under there already:lol: I was actually thinking of mounting a small fan near the back of my TV stand. My 50 inch DLP has been arbitrarily shutting itself off then the lamp light blinks. It has to hold on until the home service guy shows in 2 weeks to replace the bulb. I thought a fan might keep the air circulating back there and extend the life of the TV and XBox. If it only blows the dust out it would be a bonus

I went to Target yesterday and asked an associate to let me see the UPC symbols on the Elite and the Arcade versions (he gave me a funny look at first like wtf for?). The Arcade version had 203W and the Elite version had 175W, do both these have the new Falcon chipset? did the old chip use 220 or 203 I couldn't remember so I didn't buy anything....probably a good thing....because I did some researching on YouTube and found a bunch of different videos on how to solve the RRoD problem. The best one describes removing the XClamps that hold the heatsinks for the CPU and GPU on the bottom, and replacing them with some new machine screws, washers and nuts. I didn't do that since I didn't go to Lowes to look for the stuff, but I did try to tighten the heatsinks and push down on the clamps. I also followed their "bake video" where you heat up the system by opening up the system, keep the power and av cords plugged in (not into your tv), unplugging the fans and powering it on for 2 to 3 minutes. You'll notice your 3 Red Ring of death turn to 2 Red Ring.
explanation here:
Xbox 360: Two red lights flash on the Ring of Light (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907533)
"This behavior occurs when the internal temperature of the console exceeds the acceptable limits. You may think of this as too hot, overheating, and so on."
so you unplug the console, let it cool for few minutes, turn it on, and everything is green. I actually played for a couple of hours last night without any problems.
Well, I'll see how long it takes before it craps out on me again....and go on to removing the XClamps.

I looked at the box from my current 360 last night...it's a 203W...which matches what my power brick says.
Obviously Microsoft put out an "inbetween" version after the launch models had so many problems. I know for a fact my first one was an original, 220W model. This one I have now has lasted a lot longer than my original one...maybe due to the 203W difference.
I do know that the 175W chipset is the newest...so if you're going to buy a new XBox, I would wait until you can get one of those....if you can.

This is what one guy said to do: the "flashlight test"
Shine a flashlight through the side vent on the right of the console with it lying down horizontal. Then look through the top right vent. If you see two circle inductors and a space where a third should be, then you have a falcon. If there's 3, you have an older zephyr model.

Interesting. That would be the way to do it, without cracking the case. Does this mean some Falcons were released with a 203 power supply? I know that if you have a 175W, you most certainly have the new one.
I got my current Box before the Falcons were released...so I know I don't have one. Maybe Pete does, though. I read somewhere that the Halo 3 editions were going to have the Falcons.
I think I'm going to crack mine open this weekend and have a look. The BestBuy warranty's expired...so really nothing to lose. At least I'll get all the dust out of there and see if that helps. It's on it's last legs, anyways.

I go the red ring of death on my 360 about a year ago. It was out of warenty so I sold it on ebay for 200 bucks. I just said my 360 doesn't work and I dont know why in the add.

i actually thought about going on ebay to look for a cheap broken xbox with RRoD to see if I could fix it and resell it on ebay for more, but i'm sure there are some geeks out there that are already doing the same thing.

Some people are dumb and don't know that they can send it back to Microsoft to be repaired.

those sneaky bastards.....I do the same when I grocery shop to get the later expiration dates.
so far so good, I haven't gotten the RRoD back yet after fixing it up on Monday. I'll wait another week, then I'll be able to buy my graphics card instead for my PC. :starcat:

It pays to be an informed shopper. :yay:
Anyways, I picked it up, and I can certainly tell the difference. It's noticeably quieter than the previous version...though it certainly isn't "quiet". Also, it's faster...in regards to game loading times, the dashboard blades, etc..
