I hope you were up last night cooking cornbread with real corn for them to feed baby...it gets awfully hard on parents to crack seeds for the kids and harder for the babies to digest...or give monkey biscuits :whistle:

Awww. Baby cockateils are so ugly that they're adorable. A bit of cooled, cooked rice (hold the butter and the salt) and finely diced Romaine lettuce is good for them too.

I bred Cockatiels for years and 99% of the time mom and dad took complete care of babies and I never changed thier diets. Of course this was 25 years ago but Im sure cockatiels are still the same.

The book's right, the parents take turns feeding them and you don't have to do a thing except provide nutritious food and fresh water for the parents to feed their babies. I feel it's important to feed Mom & Dad in addition to their seed varities: plain old white rice, a variety of diced fruit, diced celery leaves, along with the diced Romaine lettuce and other greens. For an occasional change of pace I feed the parents plain crushed up people cereal, small pices of bread, and an occasional smashed cracker. My thought being that by feeding the parents a healthy varied diet their babies would get a good start in life and as adult birds would like to eat different foods. I've got some healthy birds- not even a sneeze out of them.

You do not pull babies for handfeeding till 12-14 days...

Mom and Dad will do everything for the babies for now :) All of the extras, veggies, breads and rice mixes are a fantastic addition for Mom and Dad, breeding or not :) We don't want to see Mom and Dad on seeds or pellets only forever, and it won't hurt to offer then any of these goodies (everything they eat babies get too :) Don't worry you don't have to lift a finger for them yet ;)) But don't panic if they refuse to eat what you offer either, it can take time if they aren't used to a varied diet. I know you just got your guys and you might not know what all they are willing to eat yet, so just try a little bit of everything :) My guys eat everything.....(no chocolate, avocados, high salt stuff, I think about what I should be eating and that’s usually what is great for them too...) when we eat dinner our guys are happy to finish just about everything leftover - veggies and side dishes are happily munched on :) Our bigger guys love chicken(w or w/out bones)and seafood - pork and beef not so much unless it's cooked in something else :)
But cooking a little rice or plain noodles mixed with frozen veggies is always a hit here - but you can just wash up some collard greens/Kale/Spinach and hang it in the cage and that's something that's easy and happily received here as well :)
But more than anything – don’t panic :) They’ll be here soon and when we meet up we’ll talk more about Mom and Dad’s diet and what I’ll wean the chicks to as well :)

I don't know if you’re a cooker or not but here are some fun recipes that your guys might enjoy :) I haven't tried a lot of these, I tend to stick to what I can make quickly and what I've had good success with :) My guys like anything that includes breads, pastas and rice’s (they're just like their mom - I love carbs :lmao:) so I tend to make recipes that include any of these ingredients :) Even for my guys I will freeze small servings in ice cube trays, pop out a serving, warm it in the microwave (let it cool and watch for hotspots) and serve - super easy :)
Also whatever "wet/fresh" food you put in I wouldn't leave in for more than a couple of hours - after that you can expect it to grow bacteria (not to mention smell :) But like I said try, but don't worry about it too much - we'll get them eating a varied diet eventually. They may surprise us and happily munch it up :)

Thanks for all the info. I'll add to their diet, but they are picky eaters. Even the cockatiel food I give them - they throw out the fruit, cereal, and bigger seeds. :frown: And now we have two! :yahoo:

Yes, normal pearl. I googled 'tiels and could not find an all white one like dad - he has a tint of grey on each side of his head. I purchased these as a "proven pair".

I sat down to play w/ what we possibly have a whiteface pied #### ( almost a clear pied - almost appearing albino w/ a bit of grey) and a pearl hen. It looks like we may see only greys split to these other mutations..... I took it hard at first, hahaha, with such pretty parents sometimes you have higher hopes :)
But right now, based on what we know, we should see males : grey split to wf/pied/pearl and females: grey split to wf/pied
As wf and pied are recessive - both parents would have to be carriers (split or visual) and pearl is sex linked so the boys would get the gene but need it from both parents to express it :(
So unless (which is possible) they are split to something more and we won't know until the chicks feather out we are currently expecting greys :)

Right now, without pictures - just descritpions, it looks like we've got a wf pied #### (from Roxy's description he's sounds like he's almost a clear pied - very pretty) and a pearl hen (not a wf pearl, because Roxy mentioned on the phone she does have a yellow head and red cheeks :( SO they shouldn't produce anything but greys unless they're hidding something :) Like our saving graces to get anything other then greys would be if mom was split to wf and/or wf pied and/or pied or if Dad was split to pearl. I contacted who I think may have been the woman Roxy got them from in hopes for more insight on the pair and what they've produced before. A patient person would just wait and see - I can't help but to try to figure it out, hahaha - birdnerd right ? :)

She told me dad had a orange cheak patch...if so he is NOT a WF visual...and mom should have a gray head and orange cheak patch..the males have yellow heads...


I was heavy into the WFs 15+ years ago..I got mine from CA Elsie Burgan the origionator of the WF's...they have so many new colors now..I was doing mainly Cin pearl and pieds..WF I wanted all the colors..had just got into the fallows when I got out of the WFs I have one left he is 20 yrs old...Sold all of mine to a guy locally...

I have to assume I'm your stalker :) This is Stacey with the pellets :) If you don't know what I'm talking about, then I retract that statement and I'm not your stalker :) Hahahaha :)
Anywho - I'll see the parents next Monday and report back, but I'm pretty certain Roxy has said that dad is all white w/ a little bit of grey up around his face (which based on that says wf pied), as for mama even pearl hens have a yellow head and orange cheeks, perhaps not to the extent of a grey male but still I would consider it a yellow head (plus if it were a male he wouldn't have retainted his scallops :) So in a week we'll see :) I'll definately let you know and if I can figure it all out maybe I'll add a picture or two of the chicks :)

I had one that sang the Andy Griffith song. It drove my parents insane. :lol:

I also had another one that I got on the old radio station once. Called to request a song, put the phone to birdie and he said "Z104!" They put that on the radio like 4 times that week. :yahoo:

hahaha - that's pretty good I like that "z104". You know for whatever reason the Andy Griffith song is the most common song for 'tiels to sing?? Years ago we bought a pair, and that was the males song, surprisingly I'm sure - we named him Andy :) I don't know if it's just the most common song for people to whistle or if somehow the notes are easy enough for 'tiels to get, but I have had so many people say they had/have a tiel that whistles that song! But the radio time tiel is definitely a new one :)

I know I updated Paso but if anyone else was following this thread and was curious, the parents turned out to be a whiteface pied (dad, he's very handsome) and a cinnamon pearl (mom, also just beautiful).
Right now the chicks are feathering out grey, but still no sign of orange cheek patches, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they could be whiteface (meaning mom is split to wf, a great surprise :) A few also have marbled feet - perhaps pied or split to pied - we'll see :)
As soon as I can get the camera together I'll get some shots of them :)

Thanks Roxy for letting me handfeed them! They've been a joy! This is my favorite part, so thank you again!
