I'd appreciate any help with this problem. I bought 2 new Dell laptops about 6months ago, one with windows XP home & one with windows XP Pro. They are the Inspiron E1505 models @ $1,000 each. The one with XP Pro works fine but the one with XP home (at times) won't scroll up or down or left or right. Most times it starts to scroll, then stops & go's and then continues on, but stops & go's again. Dell had me on the phone for 3 hours last week and said that it's an operating system problem and that I need to back up all my "stuff" and reinstall the operating system. They will talk me through it over the phone and there will be no charge but I am **ssed that I have to go through all this with a new computer! Is this really what has to be done? Thanks for any advice on this my friends.:yay:

This does sound more like a software problem. Probably a video driver problem or maybe a mouse issue. Try plugging a USB mouse into one of the USB ports to see if that changes anything. Did you install anything after you received the computer? You may want to consider uninstalling it to see if it's causing any conflicts. Did it work when you first got it then quit after doing some web surfing? Have you scanned for malware/spyware/viruses/etc...?

huh - owned nothing but Dell's and manage over 300 of them - no real issues...
Are they the same hardware - exact hardware? If so, it is not a driver issue as XP Pro and XP Home is the same engine/kernel and use the same drivers...
I have seen where the OEM load in some models (Optiplex workstations - 2 different models) had quirks when they came in. I reloaded using the disks that came with them and they worked fine after that... it something to do with the HDD's imaged at Dell; once I reloaded they worked fine. I never could isolate the real problem...

I'll have to find a USB mouse because I don't have one. I scroll with the up & down arrows and the page up & down buttons. Would the mouse affect them? I don't remember when this started. I just know that, as far back as I can remember, it always did it. I have scanned thoroughly for spyware & viruses. I do it 3 times each month and anytime I feel I need to if I visited a strange website. Again, I have no problem with the XP Pro on the other computer, just this one with XP home version. To conserve disc space, once in a great while, I delete all my previous restore points so I only have them back a few months. Thanks PsyOps.

I bought both computers together last June and one is XP Home and one is XP Pro. They want to do a reinstall with mine on Monday. I heard about it working, after a reinstall, from more than one person so it will probably work. I have 2 cd's but they don't look like the Microsoft operating system cd's. One says "reinstallation CD Microsoft Windows XP Home edition service pack 2" and the other says "for reinstalling Dell Inspiron Computer software". I assume the first one is the one to reinstall? Thanks clevalley.

I have always bought Dell's and had no problems. However, I have always made sure all the updates are in place. Have you kept up with your Dell E1505 Updates? If not - before your reinstall - jump over to Drivers & Downloads (http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INSPIRONI6400/E1505&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=) and perform all the necessary upgrades. With a little luck - one of the upgrades may correct your problem.

The first disk has XP on it, just in a form that can reload the PC to the way it was shipped. The other disk contains all of the 3rd party software that came on the PC, possibly some optional drivers.

Do you click with the mouse pad or the left click button below the pad? If you're tapping the pad it could be the sensitivity setting of the pad is not set sensitive enough. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the version of XP. I have both versions and have no problems with either. And I own all Dells.

I disabled the "tap" sensor. I use the left & right mouse buttons but, again, it's the scrolling that has problems and I do it with the arrow keys and the page up & down keys.

The "reinstallation CD Microsoft Windows XP Home edition service pack 2" is the Windows XP Home software re-installation, branded for Dell, with your drivers on it... it is not an "image" of how your PC came, but a true bootable MS Windows XP Home CD you can re-load from.
One thing you may want to do is go to Support Dell.com (http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/product_support/product_support_central?~ck=ln&c=us&l=en&lnki=0&s=gen) and enter your Service Tag (on bottom of laptop) and get the appropriate/new drivers for your Laptop before you build. 99% of the time you do not need to do this with the branded CD - BUT I have been bit once or twice; that would account for the 1%
The second disk "for reinstalling Dell Inspiron Computer software" is any software that came bundled with your PC (outside of MS Office), like DVD/Cd burning software, DVD viewing software, utilities... these are really not needed...
Take the first CD an "boot" to it to reload the PC. If it was me I would even delete the partion "C" (larger of the two, you will have a small ~40 MB utility partition on ALL Dells, you really do not want to delete it, but can if it lets you), recreate the "C" partition then do a long format just to make sure you blow anything and everything out for a fresh reload.
Hope it helps! :buddies:

Well folks, everything worked perfectly after the reinstall. The guy from Dell didn't even use the cd's that I have here. He told me to hold the "ctrl" key down and tap the F11 key as I turn the unit on. Then I got a red screen I've never seen before and then I clicked on restore and one more click later the computer was reinstalling the operating system. It was completed in less than 20 minutes! And it now scrolls as it should. The only downside is that it took me from 11am until 8pm to get all of my "stuff" back into the computer. Not to mention the nightmare of ALL the original "junk" and pop up offers from Dell that went with it!
Thank you all for your info! It's good to know that all of us here can help each other in some way or another. Thanks again.:yay:

Dell is not that bad... on the consumer side the first layer or two of support can be frustrating... on the government side it is not bad - we are spoiled with Gold Support and 4 hour parts and/or tech on our doorstep when something goes wrong.

After blistering the person who took my call originally (routed me back to call taker) she told me she accidentally pushed me to the top of consumer support, she read the support contract wrong :duh: - that was my first and only encounter.

Just AOL in general - AOL use to embed itself REALLY deep in the O/S, now it is not as bad as what it use to be - but still a bit tricky to remove; shows a dialog box to uncheck what you WANT to remove - POS in my opinion...
We use Corporate Symantec AV (10.0.2) and have little issues - but people who load AOL in seems to bring problems on to themselves.

I've seen that too; first hand. I used both Norton & Mcaffee until I couldn't stand them anymore! They would take up sooo much of my boot up time and kept popping up stupid messages at the worst times. When I reloaded my operating system this week, I had to go back and remove the Norton software and it acted like it didn't want me to! That's why I now use AV Grisoft as my antivirus and I use Verizon as my ISP. Grisoft updated every day right at startup and only takes about 45 seconds to do it. Much better than the others.

My sister can't run without AOL. Every week or two she has another problem. I'll clean up her system(s) (remove McAfee and the other crap AOL loads) - turn it over to her and boom - she starts having problems! The only difference is she just has to load up AOL. I finally got her to agree to turn down every damn thing AOL offers her for free. One time (last year) AOL noticed that she wasn't using McAfee and actually disabled Grisoft's Spyware module and loaded up McAfee crap! I know you have to agree but AOL has a way of getting you to say ok (for someone who is not computer literate). I just bought her ZoneAlarmPro and loaded up Grisoft again and life is good. Her system has never run so smooth and fast. I told her NOT to load anything that AOL tries to say she needs - so far, life as been good. Unfortunately, to someone that doesn't know any better - AOL makes it look like your system will die and burn if you don't load their crap. I get a few calls a week now when AOL tries to get her to load up their stuff - I wish AOL would just go belly up!

My last four systems have been Dell. The first thing I would do is remove all traces of Norton and McAfee. Mind you - it isn't easy the way they load their crap into the system. When you Remove them - you have to know the exact order to remove each module. THEY know exactly what they are doing. Sorry, I sure didn't mean to offend you.
I've spoken to a bunch of people running Norton (and McAfee) and 80%+- of them have had problems (at one time or another) with the way they burrow into the Operating System. They all go nuts when they decide to move to another package and then start the ongoing battle of removing all the code (ADD/REMOVE just doesn't seem to do it successfully). IMHO - Norton and McAfee are no different then the way AOL "takes over" a system.
Again, sorry for offending you.
So far I like my Dell, but I don't like McAfee. I may have to look for a way to uninstall it correctly and try another option.

I hope you aren't running McAfee's Security Center...anyway
1. ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS and select McAfee and then make sure you reboot.
If McAfee still raises its ugly head.
2. Download a tool that McAfee itself wrote (does that tell you something? How many vendor's have to write a separate uninstall program because of the way they embed their crap): http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
Save the file to your desktop and run it. Reboot.
If McAfee still raises its ugly head.
3. We have to make sure that all McAfee modules are disabled.
1st thing you have to do is make sure that McAfee doesn't start. Once it starts - their are a few modules that won't go away (McAfee doesn't mention this!).
A. Start
B. Run
C. Enter: services.msc
D. Under NAME scroll down to McAfee entries and tap Startup Type and tap right mouse button and select properties. Select Disable from Startup Type then hit the Recovery tab and select take no action.
Reboot computer and then try to remove with Add and Remove again.
If McAfee still raises its ugly head.
Let me know - four other things you can do.
I hope you aren't running McAfee's Security Center...anyway

No - McAfee builds in the delay. :killingme
AVG has one of the smallest footprints available yet provides super protection. Check your AVG settings and see if you don't have it doing a complete system scan every time you boot. That would be the only reason AVG would slow down your system. I always do my system scan's when I don't plan on using the PC. If you can't find the setting - just let me know and I'll step you through it. I will need to know if you are using the free version or not.

Ah, that makes sense...I usually turn my computer off (you must either leave yours on, or have the subscription version I'm guessing). So even though I can have an update scheduled with the free version, it won't update until I turn it on. :stupid: Yeah, I downloaded the free version on a whim when I started getting tired of the McAfee reminders. :jameo:

Again, sorry for offending you.
You didn't offend me I just thought you had the :killingme smilie auto-pasted into your posts since it shows up so much.
Symantec is the industry standard. Since I work for the gubmint I get it free. And it has worked fine for years, even through several upgrades.

I'm resurrecting this thread to possibly help someone NOT go through what I've been through for the last 2 months with "smell" computer's tech support. After reinstalling my entire operating system in April, the problem of intermittent scrolling went away for a week but then came back. I was then told many wrong things like: need more memory, settings are wrong, using too much memory space, it's your anti virus program, etc. After installing a new $42 RAM memory card, I found out that it was still messing up! Was I pi$$ed?!! Especially since my warranty is up in a week. So today, I finally got someone who knew what it was and it now works fine. Apparently, I had "too many programs running in the background". He went into the "run" program and "msconfig" and shut down a bunch of programs and it seems to be doing great. Hope it lasts. FYI and thank you all again who had suggestions.

You're lucky if it has only been that long for you. After buying my XPS less than 3 yrs. ago, it took me a year and a half of complaining and them switching out parts for them to finally send me another XPS just like the one I had. I got that in February, well last night my firewire connection just quit working. I tried many things I know how to do to remedy it but to no avail. I called Dell and after they troubleshooted for a while they decided the motherboard has to be replaced! I have had this laptop 4 MONTHS! Here we go again I said. I asked if they could just give me a credit towards the purchase of a new system, they said they could not do that. I'm like wtf??? I will NEVER BUY ANOTHER DELL AS LONG AS I LIVE!!!!
I have been a loyal customer of theirs for 9 yrs. and this is the thanks I get. I have spent THOUSANDS of dollars with them and they can't help me out! I say F*&% them and the horse they rode in on!!!! :burning:

I feel your pain MB. After 3, 4, 5, 6 calls, I asked for a supervisor and it sounded like the same guy. They all have the voice of the geeky guy in the old "Short circuit" movie. They told me that my warranty is up in a week and I said I will not extend it. They wanted almost $300 to extend it and I said no because this is my first and last Dell! The problem is that I own 2 Dell laptops and the other one has been flawless... Oh well, go figure right?
And they'll never part with YOUR money once they get it. You already know that so I make it a point not to give them another penny unless they fix the problem NOW. The other problem is which company can you go to and get good English speaking tech support? If Obama gets in, the only thing that will change is that it won't be a long distance call anymore. They'll be right here!:jameo:
