View Full Version : Entry Point Not Found - MSPAINT.EXE - IMM32.DLL

I get a bunch of "Entry Point Not Found" errors when opening MSPAINT.EXE.

If I keep hitting OK - it starts to load up MSPAINT. It just goes on and on and on...

I found a procedure (download new version of IMM32.DLL - it is dated 2004 and my current DLL is dated 4/2008) - go into SafeMode and copy over existing - reboot and RUN REGSVR32 C:\windows\system32...

When I go into SafeMode and attempt to copy - I get process in use (so, it won't overwrite).

For the heck of it I tried:

RUN REGSVR32 C:\windows\system32...and get c:\windows\system32\imm32.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. This file can not be registered.

I just search my drive and found the following:

C:\I386\IMM32.DLL (95KB 8/18/2001)
c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\imm32.dll (108KB 8/4/2004)
c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\imm32.dll (108KB 4/14/2008)
c:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\imm32.dll (108KB 4/14/2008)

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Who cares? It's just MSPaint. :-P

Seriously, try copying the original file over from your XP/Vista CD (may have to extract it though).

That might work.

I really like MSPAINT when cleaning up a graphic file because it is so easy to use the Bit process.

It won't work - file in use...

Um.... try copying the file over while in safe mode.

I did - for some reason IMM32.DLL is used (even in Safe Mode). There lies my problem.:lmao:

k - I have a better idea. Try uninstalling paint via Add/Remove Programs --> Add/Remove Windows Components. Then try to reinstall it the same way. Lemme know how it works out.

Noppa! Tried that and it didn't work. Heck, I even ran SFC (verifies all files) without any flags. It must be something else.

Thanks for your help waldorfman.

Damn man - sorry. Don't know what else to tell ya without charging $$$. :-)

That does suck. I say let the F-er crash and reload it.

Oh no! Sure don't want to restore my system (even though I do a mirror backup).

If I could just find some small program that would let me have the same bit manipulation that MSPaint has.

Thanks again.

Did you install SP3?

Did you install SP3?

Yes I did and that was when it got worse then SP2. I always had a problem with MSPAINT.EXE but I was able to OK OK OK to get out of the error. SP3 worked (no error's) for a while and now I can't get out of it so I can't use it any longer. So, yes - I have SP3 installed.

Damn, then you are the same guy that posted this everywhere. Have you checked Microsoft's KB?

Yes I did. I found a bunch of users with the same problems (other applications) across the net with no solutions. It is a obvious Microsoft problem but they just don't care (I guess).

OMG! For laughs I figured I'd start it and see how many OKs I would have to hit - but it started without any errors! I just started it 5 times without any problems. Wow - go figure!

Just remembered something I did - I found all the other copies of IMM32.DLL and renamed them IMM32.DLL.OLD except the one in my System32 Subdirectory. I did reboot afterwards and still got the errors but didn't try it again until today. Maybe - just maybe that had something to do with it working now.

Did you manually put SP3 or did you get it through automatic updates?

I went to Microsoft's Updates Summary Page (lists ALL possible updates for Windows XP) and downloaded the file and then updated both my Desktop and Laptop. So no - I didn't do it "automatically" through Microsoft Updates.

Young grasshopper - try this...

Start | Control Panels | Add or Remove Programs...

On the LEFT side of the window, click the Add/Remove Windows Components.

Highlight Accessories and Utilities - click DETAILS

Highlight Accessories - click DETAILS

Uncheck the box next to Paint - click ok and close all the windows to it uninstall's the component.

Reboot...

Do the same thing again - except in the last step, Check the box next to Paint to install this component...

You might need your Windows CD - but this will reinstall it.

Good luck brudder! :howdy:

Been there - done that! It didn't fix anything. However, like I said in one of my previous exchanges - it seems to be working just fine now (just tried it again). It might have been something with one of the 4 copies of IMM32.DLL (renamed to OLD) I had - who knows...but it works now.

Now THAT is weird...

Did SP3 cause this?

No. It was doing it with SP2 but I could always get out of it after answering OK three or four times. When I first loaded SP3 it worked great - no problems AND then out of no where it started up again and I couldn't answer enough OKs to get out of it.

Paint.NET - Free Software for Digital Photo Editing (http://www.getpaint.net/)

Paint in .net interface. Takes regular paint up to a low end photo shop. Free.
