View Full Version : Crappy Gas
Has anyone else had a problem with gas they got a the Sheetz in California. I got gas there Monday morning and yesterday coming home my car started acting funny. "She" was spittin' and sputterin'...... I have had an issue with getting bad gas there before and the car did the same thing. I filled my car up with gas from another station and now it acts fine. (up until we get low again or it works thru the bad gas - which ever comes first.)

There was a thread about this about 3 or 4 months ago. I've purposely avoided gas from there since then.
My mom got gas at Sheetz right about the time the other thread came out and her car wouldn't actually start for a while there, it would just spit and sputter.

I had some problems years ago from that same station... it sputtered and stalled from time to time until I ran the gas down and filled back up, but it never happened afterwards, so I guess they just get water in the trucks from time to time by mistake
I usually stay away from that place but I was playing the "Gas Lottery" that morning and didn't think I would make it to Wa-Wa.

Just throwing out suggestions, never fill up at a gas station that is receiving gas from a tanker truck because it stirs the tanks sediment and into your car it goes.
Next, buy some octane boost and fuel system cleaner and drive your car a little hard to hopefully burn off the contaminants...

It would be my luck.... I give her some octane boost and fuel system cleaner and then drive her hard. She will die on me and leave me on the side of the road in the heat!! :faint: :killingme
You are so right about filling up when they are receiving gas.... Thats a big no-no

OK don't drive it hard, just drive normal, it will help!!!

Gas trivia I heard on foxnews one morning... don't run the nozzle at full blast when filling tank... you increase the air in the flow. Fill up in the morning... gas expands as temps increase thuse you'll be paying more for less.

I got diesel fuel 2 different times at the Texeco station by gate 1 and both times the water in fule light came on in my truck. Needless to say I don't get fuel from there anymore.

If the condition of their pumps is any indicator of the gas quality, they've got some real work to do before I start buying from them again. Every time, there are pumps out of order, or the card reader won't read my card, or the reciept won't print.
I like to support them, since they are based in my family's home town of Altoona, but they need to get their act together on those gas pumps.

 The tanks are underground, they don't heat/cool quickly
there is a possibility of filling your tank and then expand to where it will overflow. That happens to bikes if you completly fill the tank.

I don't know about that...... the tank pickup has no way to introduce air into the pump line, so pumping faster or slower has no effect.
The tanks are below ground, and are not affected by the daily temps. They probably remain constant between 55 and 65 degrees. The fuel won't warm up until it's in your tank and already accounted for.

I'll see if I can find a related article online... I'm just repeating what they said and they said they started the tests thinking it wouldn't make a difference but were surprised to find that it did...

Snopes has a great one and even gives you the scientific facts behind why temps make a difference...:nerd:

But it looks like it's basically out of our control and the big oil man is once again keeping us down...

Not impossible but very unlikley, The filtering systems on gas pumps are very sophisticated.

True, but the gains are so small you could not even measure them...

Totally true, I pump my gas a low speed and if the pump price is $3.99 and I fill up with 10 gallons (just an example) I have always noticed the display indicating my pump price is $39.99 but the gallons is 10.2 or more!!!

I've measure them and normally I get more verse less, hmmmm which should I choose??? :coffee:

Well, you can believe what you want, but I find it VERY hard to believe that pumping fast vs slow can account for 2/10s of a gallon of fuel as vapor. Think about it. That is a LOT of fuel.
And as far as the temps go, if the fuel is LESS than 60*, you're getting more fuel than you should. So all winter, you get "free" fuel. It all works out in the end.

When you pump very fast the gas foams and the extra volume from the foam causes the pump to shut off. If you let the foam dissapate for 30 seconds or so you can fit more in the tank. If you pump very slow you do not get the foam, you are still putting the same amount in the tank.

A friend of mine had trouble with her car starting after having it serviced and the tech could not find anything wrong. They were able to duplicate her problem, but all diagnostic tests were run and there was nothing wrong with the car. The conclusion was that the ethanol level in the gas was higher then her engine could take (Saab). She was previously recommended to use only Shell or Texaco gas, which she did. She also said there had been random testing on the ethanol levels in gas from different brands and the ethanol levels were higher then what was represented.
