My female cockatiel pulled a blood feather last night, only it didn't come all the way out so now I have to take her to the vet to get it taken care of. I lost a cockatiel to losing a blood feather before. She pulled it in the middle of the night and I found her the next morning in the bottom of the cage laying in a puddle of blood. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to deal with. If I had heard her struggling in the night with her night terror I would have known and she wouldn't have died.
Sanji, my new female, is in my bedroom for that very reason and now she has a new clutch of 6 eggs. I am hoping the male will sit the eggs while she's gone to the vet. Sorry for rattling on, but I am worried about her. :frown:

Well she's fine, by the time Dr. Forrest and I got done pulling the feathers out he thought he was going to have to give me a sedative! :lmao: He said of all the years I've known you I've never seen you this shook up!
Oh and there is no way I could pull them by myself I am way too squeamish to do such a thing, not to mention he wanted to make sure she hadn't damaged anything else on the wing.
He says she is perfectly healthy and in very good shape for having just laid 2 clutches of 6 eggs each! Made me feel proud!

MB I wish I had seen this earlier...yes if they BREAK a blood feather just snatch it out...if they pull one out there is NO problem..wish I saw this we could have saved you a vet bill..just put her in a towel and pluck it out if not much was out you just pull it with hemostats or plyers...glad she is ok..
You know you are a nut right? Next time I need to sew something (someone) up I will call you to hold them :huggy:

I was trained to hold when I was a vet tech, but I never watched, I would ALWAYS bury my face or turn my head. I am as squeamish as they come, especially when it comes to animals because I have softer heart for animals than I do for humans. The vet bill was not that bad, and as bad as I was shook up over maybe losing my bird I would have paid him ten times what he charged me to save her. I will NEVER forget the day I found my Lucy in the bottom of her cage in that puddle of blood. I couldn't bare to go there again. Next time I will just call you. :huggy:

Yes after an experience like that...having so many tiels when I was breeding something would always scare them and you would find one with a bloody feather...simple pluck and "all better" glad she is ok..you did the right thing for sure..

Mostly if something scares them and they flop around and break one in half..

Not usually, but when it does, it can be nothing like mine was or it can be fatal. Cockatiel's are notorious for night terrors. Make sure she keeps the bird where she can hear it at night and is up with it to calm it down when she hears it fluttering about the cage or she may wake up to what I did. Good Luck! :howdy:

Paso, I caught the birds in the act of making little birdies today. First time I have actually witnessed them getting cozy so to speak. I am definitely going to get some fertile eggs. :ohwell:

She hears every noise that bird makes, she keeps him in her room. She bought a dove about a month ago and both are in her room. Its so funny when they fly around her room, of course she does not let them out at the same time. She is saving money to get another cockatiel, she loves birds. i dont have a problem with them becuase she makes sure they are well taken care of.

She can let them out together, there should be no problem. The worst that will happen is they will check each other out. I have had those and lovebirds all out together, they pretty much stayed to themselves.

I suppose I could now but she lays one every other day, so God knows which was the first one. I know you said to wait about 12 days when she lays her last, but damn, it don't seem like she's gonna stop! Last time I waited about a week, but I knew those were not fertile because he was still running away from her!

You messed up..just wait till she is done..wait 21 days then you will know..candle them now anyway..usually they lay the clutch 3-5 THEN start sitting..I think you better rest her after this and let them try again later..She is using alot of calcium and needs a break

Do I take him out of the cage or what? They go banana's when they are apart. Or do I just mess up the cage like you said before?

Like I said..move the cage..take out the nest box..move the food bowls around just make a mess of stuff...she won't set to laying until she settles down..after some time give her back her box etc...I think I would also shorten her daylight hours..

Ok, they so far all have yellow yolks, no blood. Do I take all those out and wait for the ones she may lay now since I have seen them actually mate or do I just wait?
PS, Doc says she is still a good healthy weight and is in good shape for having produced so many.

I think I would start by numbering what you have or just put a * on them or something...then you can relook at them and the others if she lays more..when you know the ones marked * have been sat on a week or so and still clear chuck them...

Not to sound stupid or anything (like I haven't already) what do I mark them with, I don't want to make her upset with any smells or have them rub off or whatever.

Mouse, just remember as hard as it might be for you to remove the eggs and not let them hatch, it might be even harder to find good, life-long homes for the babies. Unless you plan on keeping all of the babies you hatch out....

Well actually I have someone in mind that MIGHT take them off my hands and raise them for me and make her/himself some extra money. I don't want any money from it so it would be all theirs.
