Sorry if this has been posted. My mother-n-law saw this on the news last night. I definitely don't remember there ever being this many bites in such a short period. Keep your eyes peeled.

Kinda ironic.......I heard a call on the scanner today (Calvert County) for a copperhead on someones front porch. After Animal Control got there, there was actually 2 copperheads, they were caught and were gonna be released into the wild!

We had one out on the deck by our shed earlier this year. Hubby scooped it up into a big bucket and dumped it in the woods.

Heard of a copper head bite a couple of nights ago in southern Calvert. Seems like a lot this year from the calls I've heard on the scanner.

It was on the news this morning too. My son just saw a snake in the yard the other day, his decription of it was "it looked kind of looked like a ball python, but it was grey and green". Do you think he was just describing a garter snake?

Wasn't there something on the front page of Wednesdays Enterprise about a kid being bit on the finger...He was staying in the hospital for something like 3 days I thought...He was alergic to the antivenom...

Don't know, but copperheads are pretty distinctive. Here's a pic of the one from our yard.

I recieved a wildlife call about a copperhead..Guy found it on his deck and scooped it up in a bucket..It was in the White Sands area.
Told him to take it to Cypress Swamp Nature Center for a positive ID and let them release it.
With all the rain we have had recently..might be causing them to seek higher, drier and warmer places....

yes you all heard right about a kid being bit in stmarys..It happened right next to my stepdads country store (the uncle of the kid comes from time to time) The little one did have a reaction to the antivenom they then flew him to childrens and they tried again and he had the same reaction. He was sharing a room with a 3yr old who wasn't as lucky they said her whole arm was swollen and black and blue from teh copperhead biting her and when they released him she was still there. From what I heard he is doing pretty good and just has a small pinsized black and blue mark left from where he was bitten.
Saw one in the backyard a few days ago, as I was weed whacking the edges along the fenceline.
He/she didn't hang around long enough to find out if the whirling machine was something worth taking a bite out of! :lmao:

Amen! I'm always worried they're bedding down under our deck. This year our neighbor has completely ignored the weeds and what not growing behind his shed and right next to our fence. God knows what's living in there.

We had an annual party in the desert. Went out and looked for them, found them, cut their heads off, came wheeling back in on 3-wheelers, threw them in the pile and cooked them. Tastes like chicken, but REAL boney.

I don't remember how we cooked them. It must have been on a grill somehow because we were in the middle of the desert. There was a LOT of drinking going on. Go figure.

Yeah! We didn't even need a tee! Stupid things just raised their heads, and we yelled "Fore!", just prior to whacking their heads off!

I just remember we'd go out when it got dark and see where they were nestled down under the sand and get them that way. I hope Stinkpen doesn't see this tread.

We golfed a lot at a place called Villa De Paz, in west Phoenix, located on Indian School Rd., around 107th Ave. My backyard was the 8th fairway, and we would chip onto the green, late in the afternoon, just practicing, after getting home from work, and the locals had given up for the day. Maybe, around 6:00pm, we'd see them out there, looking for dinner!
Hi guys!! "9-iron, caddie - if you please?" :lmao:

Are copperheads always brown? I saw a gray snake that seemed to have the same markings.

That was just the sidewinders that did that. Don't forget a couple of the guys would make hat bands and belts out of the tanned skins. It wasn't like we were just killing them for the fun of it, it was an actual hunt where all parts of the animal got used. The rattles were the funnest part. Attach them to a little stick and you could make a pretty good imitation rattler sound. :killingme

Coppery brown with a trangular head and catlike pupils. That one looks kind of dull, like he's about ready to shed.

Looking at that pic, and others I've seen, that really makes me wonder when he said "kinda like a ball python", a similar pattern. I think there is a space a snake could get into under my shed so I wonder if they live down there....

Loss of habitat, more people, that time of year. Go hiking in the woods and you should wear boots and/or be very careful where you step. Never step over a log without checking the other side. Better to step on it and take a big step off after looking. Never step where you can't see the ground. They prefer open sunny places usually, but could be on the move.

We see them in our yard occasionally, and we usually get them with a shovel.
I know there are some people who are opposed to killing a venomous snake found on one's property but anything that poses a danger to my family or my pets is going to have to die. It's not that I don't value life, it's just not something I want to risk.

Hmmm maybe, but with the wood an leaves....or getting on and off the boardwalk....when I run I am in a my own little world, head phones blaring....
I was at Calvert State taking the trail to the beach, good speed for the uneven ground and I swear I must have side stepped 3 snakes on the way...
By side stepped I mean screaming like a little girl after jumping ten feet into the air....

Well all snakes frighten me. I hate them, and yes I know some of them eat mice , I dont care. If they show themselves in my yard they get the treatment with a hoe or nailed by a shotgun. I dont play around with snakes. None of them.

:lmao: I hate them too, I really really really do. Sadly I am not brave enough to give them the treatment. The only thing I can do is yelp and run as fast as I can.
I even get the shivers when I see a dead one on the side of the road.

To me it's kinda weird i seen this article. I live on a 400 acre farm and I hadn't seen a copperhead in roughly 10 years around here and this summer alone I have seen 3.
Curious as to what the increase in bites are all about.......Wonder if it's dumb luck or isn't something else like less habitat, weather or some other odd reason.

We used to get them all the time at my parent's house. Soon as we eliminated the ground-cover in the area we stopped seeing them.
I'm with you guys though...they fall into the same category as black widows, brown recluses, and stinging insects. They live in their world, I live in mine and we're good. They trespass, sorry, they're toast.

I did hear that when the weather starts to turn cool, they look for places of warmth to hang out, driveways, sidewalks, streets etc. I'm sure us encroaching on their habitat with housing developments and strip malls pushes them to venture out more.

I had one next to my bare foot last weekend. That was interesting. Friday morning we found another one that was a different size in a hole we dug for our frame-work. Then today I was loading our left over lumber on a freinds trailer to return it and there was a baby one under a stack of picket posts.

Apparently, he could see 2 minutes into the future. Got it on Blu-Ray DVD; it's awesome!

All native snakes in Maryland are protected by the Nongame and Endangered Species Conservation Act. You're also not supposed to go over the speed limit; people do it anyways. I will not kill a black snake or another non-venomous snake. I don't want a copperhead around that could potentially harm myself, my family, friends, or pets.

And, who's going to know - once they're in your backyard?
If they are a danger to you or your family, well who are you going to protect - the snake, or your loved ones?
