And yes, I'm old. :lmao:

My first job was working with Vax 11/780's and Vax 8600's - our off-line satellite simulator was a PDP 11/70 with a WHOPPING 64K of memory, core memory that is. I was shown you could flip the switches for the boot loader, start the boot strap and stop the unit, pull the memory card and actually view the memory iron cores - if the slug was up, it was set thus a "1", if it was still down, it was a "0"... you could verify bit-per-bit if the memory was actually working by looking at it. :nerd:

In the shop we had a PDP 11/45 with a uni-bus adapter to test the cards from the 11/75... we also had disk drives where you actually had to do head alignments on them, mag tapes drives aligning the heads as well... when the vacuum assist loading ones came in those were a joy to adjust! If you changed the air filter, you had to re-adjust the whole unit because the change in air pressure would cause them not to load.

Thank God I missed the punch cards, I actually excessed them and sent them out for destruction, that was one of my first tasks!

Oh yeah, I just turned 40, so that makes me younger than you. :neener:

Thanks! I have checked at work and we do not have any... I did open a HDD for her to use, the students get to pass it around and look at the internals of a hard disk. Send me a PM if you find any, I will work it out and come and get whatever from you! :buddies:

You think you are dating yourself - I started out on the old Univac IIA! I use to teach newly hired operators. We first used the rings on IIIA's. Anyway, I remember saying "no ringy - no writey" to help students remember when the ring is used. Honest, I meant nothing by the saying. Unfortunately, I got called to Personnel about a complaint from a student. That was my first (and last) introduction to (what they now call) Sensitivity Training!:killingme:killingme:killingme
