Have included the link to the article but you may have to be a member of Washington Post. com to read it on line have included an excerpt. I can't believe by putting up a McCain/Palin sign the NAACP was involved by the morning after. So to follow this through if one felt inclined to vote for McCain would this make that person a racist. Whatever happened to Freedom of Speech????

The sign went up Sunday evening, bold black letters against the stark white background of the marquee at the Colony South Hotel & Conference Center in Clinton: "Country First. McCain/Palin."
By daybreak, pandemonium had broken loose all across heavily Democratic Prince George's County. Many local supporters of Democrat Barack Obama, jolted by the message as they headed down Branch Avenue on their Monday morning commutes, grabbed cellphones and BlackBerrys to notify friends. Operators of neighborhood e-mail group lists cried foul to their memberships. The NAACP logged calls. Community leaders demanded boycotts of the hotel, a common venue for Democratic events.
"Businesspeople have to be mindful of the sentiments and sensibilities of their market trading area, and Prince George's County is overwhelmingly for Obama," said community activist Arthur Turner of Kettering, who was among those advocating a boycott. "People I have talked to look at the sign as a slap in the face. They feel it was blatant disrespect. . . . I have heard people say they will no longer patronize Colony South because of that disrespect."
The outcry over the hotel marquee tapped into the passion -- and sometimes anger -- that has characterized this fall's presidential campaign. Supporters of Republican candidate John McCain have vented their rage at rallies this week, applauding thunderously as McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin, accused Obama of "palling around with terrorists."
Prince George's, though, is clearly Obama Country. As the nation's wealthiest mostly black community, where about 77 percent of registered voters are Democrats, residents have Obama placards in their yards, bumper stickers on their cars and the candidate's visage on their T-shirts.
The marquee supporting the GOP ticket in "an area that is strongly African American was like putting a stink bomb in the middle of the living room," said University of Maryland political Professor Ron Walters. "What it does show is the emotions that are around this campaign and this election."

So, in PG county, it's OK to plaster Obama signs all over the place but not McCain signs. Just because you live or work in PG county doesn't mean you can't vote for McCain. Not many will, but's it's not fair to censor anything that says McCain on it just because you don't like it.

I can only guess that most of Southern MD will be voting for McCain. I've seen lots of McCain signs and stickers. That doesn't mean there aren't any Obama stickers. Maybe we should feel insulted, slapped in the face and victims of racism.

Five more years and I'm out of this screwed up state. I will miss living near the bay but I will not miss the politics and other crazy stuff that goes on around here.

Colony South Hotel has the freedom to leave that sign up, just like the Dixie chicks had/have the freedoms to say that Bush made them ashamed to be from Tx.. However, the owners of Colony South had to understand that the local people of PG county would not be happy about their McCain Support...

The article said that the place is "common venue for Democratic events" they had to understand that there could be a backlash...........

If you are a Business, you have to understand that announcing your political views could potentially be bad for business...

I can see it now.

Location: Southern Maryland Hospital Emergency Room

"Sir/Madam, are you in support of boycotting Colony South Hotel?"

"Ah, yes! McCain is a racist cracker and you support him so of course I'm going to boycott the hotel."

"May I see your insurance card please?"

''I don'ts have one"

"Sir/Madam, there's the door, this is a private hospital and we don't serve racists."

Should happen but never will.

And you don't think it's an extreme over-reaction to get the NAACP involved? Or am I not reading your post correctly?

I'm starting to fear Obama, and it's not even McCain's doing, but the doing of Obama's own supporters.

This is where your flaw is. You are disliking him, at least in this statement, not for what HE has done, but what his supporters have done. That isn't fair at all seeing as both sides have looney supporters.

Where did you even get that? The only thing I got from his (her?) post is that a business should know that expressing political views could cause them to lose business.

That was pretty much my point; any business person should know the consequences of their actions…

Michael Jordan got a lot of flack a while ago when wouldn’t lend support to a candidate or talk about his political affiliation…… He said and I’m paraphrasing… “Republican’s buy shoes too…” He took a lot of flack for that, but you know what… he is right. If you’re a business man, you are trying to appeal to everyone. Politics are such a divisive issue, that people are very passionate about…

In the original post it said that “The NAACP logged calls..” I never got that the NAACP actually acted upon those calls.. If they did, that would be wrong………….

Hey, life's not fair.

If Obama inspires loonies to go crazy over a mere sign, that is a problem for me. And if they're calling the NAACP, that means they believe it is a racial offense.

And, judging from Moe's reaction, and Cowgirl's, and pcjohnnyb's, I am officially afraid of an Obama presidency.

The business should know the consequences of their actions...for posting a political sign. That's ridiculous. It's a sign. I see Obama/Biden signs around businesses, and I don't get on the phone to all my friends warning them about it, nor do I send out mass emails about it. I certainly don't call civic protection organizations.

It is an absurd over-reaction. And that you three don't seem to see that is scary.

What was your take on the Dixie chicks and the resulting backlash against them?

So I can put you on the list of those who don't think the reaction to this sign was way over the top?

There is a difference between criticizing your president on foreign soil during a war, and simply putting out a campaign sign. I'm sorry you cannot differentiate between the two.

I didn't jump in to start ranting. I jumped in because once again you were trying to make up your silly little lies. Just like you said I think it's ok to pick on a pregnant 17 yr old, and it's ok to photoshop pictures of 7 yr olds.

Well in MY statement that YOU quoted, I clearly said they if the NAACP acted upon those calls then they would be wrong... So any rational clear minded adult individual can discern that I would also think that those that made the calls to the NAACP would be wrong also...... or an over-reaction as you like to call it.

I’m sorry if I didn’t make myself clear the first time………..

I don't read every post in this forum - there's no possible way to do that. So if you see someone threatening a presidential candidate on here, please report the post so I can take care of it instead of just making wild accusations against me.

Thanks for your cooperation.
