Okay so I get this new puppy and decide that since she is a smaller breed we are going to try and crate train her. I have always been told that a dog will never poop where they sleep. THIS DOG HAS NO ISSUE WITH POOPING WHERE SHE SLEEPS!!! I don't think the crate is too big. It was used to travel with my cat a while back.

Any tips?

I am feeding her aruound 5:30 and she is not going in the crate until around 9:30. In between 5:30 and 9:30 she goes outside atleast 8 times. We try once every half an hour until she goes. She waits until she gets in that crate and then she goes. I have had to give her a bath every morning.

What kind of dog? How was she raised? If she was kennel raised she knows NO difference...I start my pups on papers early on and they know the difference between the bed and papers right off the bat...some people raise in kennels with no beds so they have no diffence (ie no bed/vs papers etc)

Sometimes if you bring dog inside immediately after they go, they'll learn not to go if they want to stay outside. I doubt that's what she's doing, because she's so young and you haven't had her very long. Take her outside and give her a command (go potty, go poopy, etc) and when she does, praise the heck out of her. If she starts to go in the house (or the crate) and you catch her in the house, pick her up and quickly take her outside and give her the potty command. If she goes right away when you put her in the crate, you might have to wait there a minute and if she starts to go, then pick her up and wait with her outside until she goes. If she's going in the middle of the night, then you might have to wake up a few times to take her out.

Well there is your problem..it will probably pizz and shiat everywhere its whole life..especially a groomers table.(:frown:..I hope during all this crate training you are getting her used to clippers so when you get her done she does not flip out..grooming is very very important at a young age...Cockers not raised properly for the groomer are the PITS...(my rant for the day..I am headed out to clean the grooming room I work today )


On the crate...give her a bed side and a poop side...that should at least keep her clean..

I would say over a few months time he went maybe 4 times in a crate. Having him eat earlier really helped.

Also you can get up in the middle of the night to let her out. We did that too and it got him to the point now where he sleeps all night. He goes into his crate on his own and lays down. At first we couldn't find him when he started doing this. Now he loves it and I think it is because it is only his. The other dogs can't get in, but he can go on their beds.

Its an adjustment and part of being a good dog owner. At night wake up let her out and then put her back in.

Patience!! It takes a lot of patience. Use the crate only for bedtime and for times you are away. NEVER use the crate as a form of punishment. If they see that you are using it as punishment they will rebell. They also think it is punishment if you put them in their crate while you are home and up and about. If you are sleeping, that tells them that it is bedtime and this is my personal space.

I agree with you there. Mine goes in there and takes naps and the door stays open. If we need time to do chores or other things around the house he will go in there with the door shut and be fine.

Right now we are just using it for when we are away and at bed time. Baby steps....LOL

Good job now get her used to clippers especially around the head/ears and get her used to working with her feet...go ahead and get her an appt (after her last puppy shot) to get a grooming so she can get used to it..take her every 3-4 weeks for the first year.. :yay:

My advice was about "crate training". If your train your dog young enough about what a crate is used for then it will use the crate when it is tired and wants a nap during the day. I too leave the door open and my dog takes naps during the day. However when I was "crate training" my puppy I didn't put her in her crate if I was home. She would think it was for being bad.

No I understood, I think you meant to reply to the person I quoted.

We only use the crate for bed time and if we have to go out during the day and can't take her(bruno). She won't go in the crate for me but she will go in for my mom and stepdad with no problems. She thinks I am part of her pack as she knows I am the one who takes her out to potty and I am the one who feeds her and gives her belly rubs etc. She is extremely spoiled that is all i have to say.

You have to be on top of things and try to get the dog on a set potty schedule (we got bruno now to the point where she lets us know she has to go) she either whines or she barks and if we don't catch on right away she comes over and either bites or puts her paws up on our leg so she can get our attention.
